Back in the 50s and early 60s, when the UN was basically an organization to rubber stamp US foreign policy, we were told ( and taught in school) what a wonderful organization the UN was. As soon as the 3rd world countries formed a bloc that did not generally suppout US policy, the UN was considered misguided and those who wanted to destroy it or pull the US out were on the lunatic right wing fringe. Today that unilateralist anti-UN psychosis of the former right wing periphery has become mainstream political thought.

Gee, who'd a thunk it? Agree with a person (or country)and they say nice things about you. Disagree with them and tension develops.

You just described basic human nature. It surely follows the
diplomatic relations of every nation in recorded history.

You're *censored* brilliant.

...but a country is not a person and the characteristics of "human nature" cannot be applied to it. Foreign policy is determined by a small elite who use their control of the usual instruments of socialization to manipulate public opinion to gain its support. However, I have to agree with you on one point; I'm not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed.

RE: Should the UN be clos

"W" does not even come close to having the charactor of Kofi Annan and neither does Blair for that matter.

I personally am honoured that the UN has somebody like Kofi Annan heading the UN. He is a good man and is not afraid to stand up to anyone, especially "W".

That's why Bush and his thugs are so hostile towards Annan. In a job where you really have no influence except your character, he has been a powerful force.

We do run the world. You hate us for it.

That's nothing but rethoric, and the most commonly used defence over any critisism. Mind you, you chose better wording, most of the time the retort is "you're jealous of us"

eh?

Jealous of what??

Nobody's hating you for anything, it's more like seeing your brother getting into heavy drugs and taking the wrong path, but when addressed he's in nothing but denial.

But when you say you run the world do you mean by ruleing economically? Forcefully? Or leading by example?

If the US wants Annan out, obviously he's doing something right.

Yeah, but countries like Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Zimbabwe etc... love him. What does that say??

RE: Should the UN be clos

They don't love him or hate him. They don't want a lackey for US policy in the position though.

Most of Annan's strongest support comes from the democratic nations of Europe and Asia. It's based on the work he has done and the reforms he wants to institute. Canada is also among his strong supporters. So is approximately half of the United States, just not the Bushites.

Is This the UN Death Knell?

By

James Bredin

Are we watching the death knell of the United Nations now?
Like the League of Nations to the dustbin of history somehow.
Are we mere observers of events that take place in our times?
Where organized dictatorships dominate sometimes.

The UN still claims international socialist status,
Though they may soon need help of a breathing apparatus,
They claim to fix human rights, ethnic cleansing and stop all wars,
Though Kojo’s oil-for-food scandal sometimes underscores.

Refused to go to war with Saddam because he was a friend,
We didn’t know about Kojo then so we didn’t comprehend.
Cloaked their agenda in the guise of human rights,
Pious pompous propaganda but don’t turn on the lights.

Their conference in Durban, four days before 9/11,
On racism and xenophobia in their seventh heaven,
They wanted to extort billions from developed nations,
For historical slavery so send those big donations.

Both Israel and the US at the conferences, walked out,
Because they could see what this organization was about,
Then the UN blamed Israel for trying to build a wall,
To keep suicide bombers out so Israelis wouldn’t fall.

They wrote their Earth Charter for complete UN domination,
Through the International Court and Kyoto formation,
All armies and guns will be transferred to UN command,
Agenda to be taught in the schools and we’ll think it’s grand.

They want to reform now that the writing is on the wall,
Their socialist and Kojo’s antics might cause their downfall,
They claim they’re going to reform this September,
Where their despot tin pot dictators vote – every last member.

Bold as brass, they demand a percentage of our GDP,
Our socialist politicians love it and they all agree,
I suggest the UN be replaced by a new League of Lands,
Democracies where tin pot dictators do not have a hand.

Ah, but that seems to be the gist of your hate. We do run the world. You hate us for it.

Live with it.

Run the world? You can't even run Iraq.

No, the limits of the American "super-power" have been clearly shown to the world. Facts are, the only thing the almighty US is running is itself...

...right into the ground.

Let's look at the things that nobody is talking about, Mr. Mom.

The Security Council, including the USA, had oversight of every contract, every sale. They were informed by UN officials, but didn't do anything.

The man who worked to corrupt the program is in custody. His name is Saddam Hussein.

Paul Bremer received $8 billion from Oil for Food to administer to the Iraqi people. The lion's share of that went to Halliburton and its sudsiduaries in no-bid contracts and disappearred with little or no oversight. Halliburton still sends cheques to Dick Cheney.

The purpose of Oil for Food was to feed the Iraqi people and keep keep WMD out of Iraq. It accomplished both of those goals. It was, in fact, successful enough that the US asked that it be kept in place for a year after the US took over.

Everybody knew the program was corrupted from the start. It was obvious...Saddam was building palaces. We all know that isn't free.

The UN, and its Secretary General, have no money, no army, and no power except what is granted to them by member nations.

This is nothing but a witch hunt. It began about three minutes after the BBC got Annan to say (and they had to press him) that the US invasion of Iraq was illegal.

I'd be interested in seeing some sources or links detailing the above info.

http://www.un.org/News/dh/iraq/oip/facts-oilforfood.htm

A UN document, dated January 10, 2005,</a> states clearly, “Although the UN has been accused of secrecy, all Oil-for-Food contracts had to be submitted to the UN for approval via the national authorities of each supplier. All details of every contract were known not only by the national authorities of each supplier but also by the members of the Security Council 661 Committee who had the power to approve or hold any contract.”

Those are just for starters. You'll find it mentioned in the CBC documentary on the subject as well. There is also the fact that Saddam was making far more money from illegal smuggling to Jordan and Turkey outside of Oil for Food and the US, although they had troops in the area and everybody knew what was happening, did nothing about it.
