James brought up the word construct. I don't remember ever really hearing that word used like that. I heard someone explaining something to someone in terms of a construct. It was interesting, a new way of thinking and viewing things. It is simple as james says, but it is also complicated. I read up a bit on these constructs, they are everywhere, like the invasions of the body snatchers. What is your view on contructs? Is it really possible to tear them down?

Should canada have a military at all? My answer is no, but my view comes from a different prospective. I was married to a career military person for 14 years.

I can only type with one finger today, I am home all day in pj's, unable to move one of my arms! I am drugged on muscle relaxants, but still I drag my ass to this board. The drugs make me think I have entered the world of david cronenberg. Could also be Psychosis to.

'scuse me folks, but I'm going to talk to James in his own fucking language for a bit...I spent my young life fixing farm equipment that was bought used when my mother was a girl, so I'm well versed in obscenity.

Yes Canada should have a god damned military. It should be trained and equipped for peace-keeping and peace-making, as well as enforcing our fucking sovereignty, and nothing more though. That means it doesn't need to be so dick-licking big, and we wouldn't get any cocksucking tanks, and a lot of fuckers who like death wouldn't consider it to be a fucking military at all. Fuck them though.

Okay, enough of that...it's too hard to do without giggling.

It all depends on what you mean by military though, James. I happen to think that a peace keeping force needs military training and equipment to do their job. I also think that peace making is necessary in places like Sudan and Rwanda (and Afghanistan about ten seconds after the USSR pulled out).

I don't think a military that needs wars to justify its existence is a good thing to keep around...it's like having a loaded hand gun under your pillow.

As an adjunct to the military, I would like to see a civilian corps to do a lot of humanitarian work. I wrote an article on that once, you can find here
http://www.vivelecanada.ca/article.php/20040512110851666
so I won't get into that here.

It would be great if we could just abandon our military and put the funding to better use. But it just can't happen. Not in today's world and especially not in tomorrow's world.

We need our troops for defense, to go on missions and to use for other things like what you said, non-military roles.

We needed to flex our military muscle in the north to show Denmark that we're not ready to give up Hans Island. It's an island in the north that could become valuable as the ice continues to melt.

A country still can't go without a military. It would be too embarassing if we needed them for something (like Afghanistan).

Simply Canada should have a military however they should begin dissolving their relationship with NATO. I see a better future for Canada as a neutral peacekeeping Nation then I do as NATO cannon fodder.

all ready there are too many posts in this discussion.

Has the thought ever crossed your mind, that if we didn't have a military, there would be no terrorist threat, because the terrorists wouldn't want to attack us because, we weren't fucking around in there home countries with our.......... military?

Just hope the little brown people down in central america, where Canada DOES fuck around in 'their' home countries, don't become terrorists.

Of course, they're not muslim, so they're probably not inclined that way anyway.

You do realize, don't you, that a lot of the indigenous people of central america don't consider Canada their 'friends'.

I can tell you about it, but I have a feeling you already know.

Here's an idea, T-monkey...Canada is about the best placed of western nations to recognise and cure it's own evils (and there are more than a couple) and then act as a leader to encourage other western/northern countries to do the same.

We do have at least some (ever-shrinking and largely undeserved) credibility with developing nations though. If we keep leaning on the Liberals (our natural ruling party) by voting to their left, we might just manage to become the country we claim to be.

Ofcourse we need a military. We rely on the United States too much it puts strain on our relationship with them. When we have no army, the United States will feel they have more power over us with stuff like softwood lumber like we saw, energy, water, etc. They already do this because we are powerless and they are powerful. Get it? Canadian military now is a joke, we could have assisted in Iraq or more in Afghanistan but look, we still had camoflage suits designed for the forest used in the desert. Pathetic.

RE: Should Canada have a

I'm not saying that our military doesn't need fixing, but if you want to use it as cannon fodder for the USA's imperialist adventures, you'd better think again.

We have a lot of power over the US, our politicians are just afraid to use it. We can devastate their economy by just cutting back on the electricity and natural gas we supply them with. They are as dependent on us as we are on them. The military has little or nothing to do with it because Canada has few enemies and belongs to many multi-lateral institutions that must, by law, come to our aid if we are attacked.
