Father Furious After Army Son Hit in the Chest With a Mallet, Suffers Seizure During Hazing

Disturbing video of a solider being struck in the chest with a wooden mallet at Fort Bragg, N.C. and then collapsing on the ground has his father furious and demanding punishment for those involved, WOOD-TV reported.

Ken Roach of Michigan said his son, 22-year-old Sgt. Phillip Roach, suffered a seizure and required stitches after knocking his head on the ground when he fell. He said the Army later acknowledged the April incident was a “hazing” event to mark his son’s promotion to sergeant.

“I never thought in my wildest dreams I’d be contacted by anybody that my son had a seizure and was hit in the chest during a hazing incident,” Ken Roach told the Associated Press.

Video of the incident first obtained by WWMT-TV shows Phillip Roach receiving the blow after another solider first takes several practice swings. Phillip Roach stumbles backward, then shakes the other soldier’s hand before collapsing.

Ken Roach, an Army veteran himself, told WOOD both the soldier wielding the mallet and the one filming it were his son’s superiors.

“He needs punishment. That was assault with a deadly weapon,” he told the station. “He could’ve killed my son and he should pay for it.”

I don't blame the father for being furious, I'd have been pissed too if it were my kid.

I understand the purpose of hazing and 'giving the new guy a hard time" but this action was just stupid.

Was it?

It found a flaw in the Sgt., that's what hazing is meant to do. Someone will come along and say the act caused it, but a similar act could very well take place in combat.

Hazing has a place in the Armed Forces.

Well why don't they just shoot him in the head?

It'll be good and purposeful because they'll expose the flaw that bullets will go right through his skull and that can happen in combat too.

Taking a mallet to the chest is all about machismo, in my opinion. Even those who 'can handle it' can still die from it. Houdini?

Partly.

It's also about making sure the guy next to you can hack it. The Sgt. couldn't. No fault of his own, he just had a condition is all.

A classic is liquid heat applied to the whole of your naked body and being tied to a tree in the dead of winter. Later on as the pain sets in, and hypothermia begins, pelted with snowballs, relentlessly.

Oh it can go to far, there's ample proof of that around the net. But a mallet to chest? That's just tame compared to some traditions.

I served 10 years on active duty in the U.S. Army. I was promoted 6 times, from a Private E-1, to a Sergeant First Class E-7. I NEVER underwent any form of hazing after a promotion, and neither did anyone that I knew undergo it.

This kind of crap serves NO purpose at all. It is NOT designed to find out if the guy can "take it".

Canadian Bear, you are simply out in left field if you think this stuff is normal!

Given how many times I've disproved your nonsense. Do you really want to go through all the embarrassment, yet again?

If someone did something like that to me I wouldnt lift a finger to help them with anything.

Same with a mallet to the chest. If you want to test the new guy just put him through training. I'm sure thats difficult enough as it is without having to worry about one of your colleagues attacking you with a weapon that can cause death.

It was consensual.

All that proves is that he's physically capable, and has the education to do the job.

Being able to keep your sh!t together under pain and/or extreme stress, is a whole other matter.

I'm sure thats difficult enough as it is without having to worry about one of your colleagues attacking you with a weapon that can cause death.
Again, it's consensual.
