Where's Uncle Buck when ya need him?

An elementary school in Seattle has decided to not allow students to dress up in costume for Halloween this year.

The Seattle Times reported that school officials said the ban was approved out of concern the costumes would be a distraction. One parent said earlier in the week that a school vice principal told him the costumes were banned because observing Halloween might be offensive to some students, but the school said that wasn't the case.

“Staff suggested that since Halloween falls this year on a half day of school, the school not allow costumes," district spokeswoman Teresa Wippel said in an email. "It takes students a while to change into their costumes, and students are distracted, taking away from the already limited instructional time.”

Some parents told the newspaper that although Halloween has its roots as a religious observance, it's now a secular holiday that shouldn't be considered offensive.

I think the parents are on-board, it's the school that figured there would be too much dilly-dallying putting on their costumes that it would waste half the day or some such horse sh!t.

Northern Ontario,
The principal at Buckman Arts Elementary released a letter stating "the celebration of Halloween at school can lead to student exclusion." Not wanting any students to feel left out over costumes, he said most Portland Public Schools would downplay Halloween because of "social, financial and cultural differences among our families that we must respect."

What I find the saddest about that is that Halloween was the all inclusive holiday in our school, and it is in our neighbourhood now too. even the poor kids could afford a cheap mask. It wasn't about religion, we could all celebrate together. Taking that away is wrong.

Around here, it's the religious types that want to ban Halloween.

I agree with this school board, we should outlaw any celebration of any kind in school.
