Sarah Mullaly is sworn in as Archbishop of Canterbury

Sarah Mullaly has been sworn in as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury and the first woman in the role.

The principal leader of the Protestant Church of England was appointed by King Charles III to be the second Archbishop of Canterbury of his reign after Justin Welby, who crowned the King at his Coronation on 6th May 2023, resigned.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, who is chosen by the monarch, is regarded as the third highest rank in the Church of England, after Jesus (1) and the monarch (2), who is the Supreme Governor (thanks to King Henry VIII).

One of the duties of the Archbishop of Canterbury is to crown the new monarch.

Mullaly is a former nurse and former Chief Nursing Officer of the NHS and is one of the 26 Church of England bishops to sit in the House of Lords, the Upper House of the British Parliament.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have met the new Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Heir to the Throne and his beautiful wife - the future King and Queen - welcomed the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullaly, the first woman to assume the role, at the Archbishop of Canterbury's official resident at Lambeth Palace in London.

The King ordered that Mullaly should be the second Archbishop of Canterbury of his reign. It is the monarch which appoints the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Prince William will become King upon his father's death. Will it be Mullaly who crowns him?

The Archbishop of Canterbury ranks third-highest in the Protestant Anglican Church after Jesus and the monarch.
