European Nations League

Liechtenstein 1-3
San Marino

Rheinpark Stadion, Vaduz

San Marino, the world's fifth-smallest country, recorded the biggest win in their history tonight as they beat Liechtenstein in Liechtensteiner capital Vaduz in Europe's Nations League

The result means that Sam Marino have been promoted to League C, with their only defeat being against Gibraltar...

San Marino is basically a hill with a few buildings on it. It's 61 sq kms. Only four countries are smaller. Its population is 36,000.

Liechtenstein itself is tiny, but is 2.5 times bigger than San Marino.

..& they lost to Gibraltar, which I actually knew about (background in a couple of different novels), and where it was…

Gibraltar is actually ten times smaller than San Marino but isn't a country. It's technically party of the UK. Its population is around the same as San Marino's, though.

The UK is weird in football in that it has several national teams.

In the province I live in is a park, with a permanent population of 10 (or so) people, called Prince Albert National Park.
It has an area of 3,874 square kilometres (1,496 sq mi) itself. Crazy….

Here's a good idea of how small San Marino is.

San Marino has an area of 61 sq kms.

My town - Bolton Metropolitan Borough (shown above within the county of Greater Manchester) - is 140 sq kms.

San Marino has a population of around 36,000 and Bolton has a population of around 300,000.

Almost the same area:

But about 50,000 less bodies here. Regina is about a Gibraltar larger in area.

Amazing scenes in Liechtensteiner capital Vaduz as San Marino players and fans celebrate their first ever away win, after the world's fifth-smallest country beat Liechtenstein 3-1 in the Nations League to win promotion to League C for the first time...

How the world's lowest-ranked team - 210th out of 210 - could qualify for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, USA and Mexico via the Nations League Playoffs...

Highlights as San Marino thrashed Liechtenstein 3-1: San Marino have lost 299 of the 311 games they have played; yesterday's victory was their first away win, the first time they have scored multiple goals in a win and the first time they came from behind to win...
