Sacred coronation oil will be animal-cruelty free

Consecration of coronation oil

The sacred oil was consecrated in Jerusalem

By Sean Coughlan
Royal correspondent

The oil used to anoint the King in the coronation is one of the most sacred and mysterious parts of the ceremony - and a new quantity has been prepared.

But reflecting modern animal-friendly sensitivities, this oil will not include any ingredients from animals.

The "chrism oil" for the coronation was consecrated in a religious ceremony in Jerusalem on Friday.

This was carried out in one of the city's holiest Christian sites, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Previous versions have included civet oil, from the glands of the small mammals, and ambergris from the intestines of whales.

There had been concerns about animal cruelty and the need to protect wildlife and the latest formula for the holy oil for King Charles's coronation will be animal free.

Although the coronation is seen as a great moment of national pageantry and historic rituals, there is a strong religious element.

The anointing of the King has echoes of a christening or the ordination into religious orders, with the monarch being symbolically touched with holy oil on the head, chest and hands.

This was considered such a sacred moment that the television cameras were not allowed to film it in 1953 - and there has been speculation about whether the anointing will be shown on TV during King Charles's coronation on 6 May.

The new oil includes olive oil scented with a mix of essential oils, sesame, rose, jasmine, cinnamon, neroli and benzoin, with orange blossom also added.

It also has a royal family significance, partly using olives grown on the Mount of Olives at the Monastery of Mary Magdalene, which is where the King's grandmother, Princess Alice, is buried.

In his Christmas message, the King had spoken of his own Christian faith and how much he had been moved when he visited biblical sites, such as Jesus' birthplace in Bethlehem.

The oil was consecrated by the Patriarch of Jerusalem and the Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built on the site where it is believed Jesus died and was buried.

Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, welcomed the use of oil from the Mount of Olives, a site outside Jerusalem with many biblical connections.

"This demonstrates the deep historic link between the coronation, the Bible and the Holy Land," said the archbishop.

He added: "From ancient kings through to the present day, monarchs have been anointed with oil from this sacred place."

The implements used for the anointing - including a spoon - are rare survivors of the original medieval coronation regalia, most of which were destroyed on the orders of Oliver Cromwell in 1649.

Wish we had more notice, as my Girlfriend could have wiped them up a batch of "chrism oil" scented however they would’a liked. From Frankincense and Myrrh to Orange Blossoms and Japanese Mint and about 20 other essential oils to an individual’s taste. Pick your flavour of religion to bless it after that.

It could be used to symbolically touch with oil on the head, chest and hands….& a couple of drops under the tongue just for fun.

It's better keeping up with ancient tradition and having the Coronation oil made with olives from the Mount of Olives and blessed by priests in Jerusalem rather than crudely concocted by some woman in Canada somewhere using ingredients bought from her local supermarket. It somehow wouldn't quite have that mystique.

She uses Extra Virgin Olive Oil as, at room temperature, it’s still a liquid as opposed to Extra Virgin Coconut Oil that is a solid at room temperature….for things that need to be an oil at room temperature. It’s not from the Mount of Olives…but it might be from Costco if that helps…& they are pretty good about the quality of their products.

It could be blessed by whomever turns your crank & blows your hair back.

Maybe you should contact the King and tell him. He might be all for changing his mind and using your missus's concoction.

Also known as rapeseed oil, because it's cultivated from rapeseed.

Rapeseed takes its name from the Latin "rapum", meaning "turnip", because rapeseed is related to turnips, swedes, cabbages, Brussels sprouts and mustard.

The chrism oil which will be used to anoint His Majesty The King on 6th May 2023 has been consecrated in Jerusalem.

The ceremony took place in The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The oil has been consecrated by the Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III, and the Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, The Most Reverend Hosam Naoum.

You know….tried it. Great for cooking, and it does work well, but kind of gritty to be used topically if also made into a cream or salve or applied straight up as on the skin as an oil.
Maybe you should contact the King and tell him. He might be all for changing his mind and using your missus's concoction.
It’s kind of late now, but I bet my Missus’s oil is much more fun than than the oil that’s going to be used.

An hour or so after the anointment and Chuck would be thinking, “I’m suddenly aware of my teeth! I never think of them but I can feel them now….and all of my sinus cavities…Lord! There must be six of them & I know where they are and it feels….pretty great actually!”

Then about 10 minutes later He’d really be having a fantastic journey of a coronation. Afterwards he could head back to the palace, catch some Netflix, and enjoy the ride. I’d advise him to stay hydrated and just go with it.

He might actually want to get anointed with that chrism oil on a regular basis though and not just coronations, as he is not a young man and it does work well as a topically applied analgesic for various aches and pains too.

My Missus usually passes her oil (when it’s passed as an oil) to her friends and family in one ounce bottles (or capsules, or as a cream, or a salve) but I suppose for a Royal Ceremony and usage she could find a Saskatchewan Themed Urn of similar size to the one shown above in the O.P. without all the Gay silver filigree and such:

P.S. The Missus’s Coconut Oil, made from Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, though is a solid at room temperature, turns into an oil again, just from body heat, and its a pretty fantastic lubricant that also smells & tastes great. Neither Chuck or his Missus are Spring Chickens and this might open some doors that he thought where long closed and forgotten about.

Zadok the Priest will also be performed at Charles III's coronation.

It was composed by the British composer Handel for the 1727 coronation of King George II and has been performed at every coronation since then.

The lyrics of the piece are biblical, being a distillation of 1 Kings 1:34-45:

Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anointed Solomon king.
And all the people rejoiced and said:
God save the King! Long live the King! God save the King!
May the King live for ever. Amen. Hallelujah.

On the 6th May, this glorious song will ring out around Westminster Abbey and in the homes of billions watching the coronation worldwide.

Twelve other new pieces of music have also been commissioned for the coronation.

Time for the Jacobites to rise and restore the True King!

Who, as it happens, is Franz, Duke of Bavaria.

Ahhhh, the Jacobites. The people who supported the restoration of an Absolute Monarchy who were soundly defeated by Government troops in 1745. You support Absolute Monarchy over Constitutional Monarchy.
