Rodney King dead at 47

Rodney King, whose 1991 beating at the hands of police led to deadly riots in Los Angeles the following year, was found dead in a swimming pool on Sunday in Rialto, California, police said.
King, 47, whose beating was captured on video by a bystander, was discovered by his fiancee, Rialto police Captain Randy De Anda said.
King’s death was reported to police Sunday morning in Rialto, about 80 km east of Los Angeles. Police pulled his body from the swimming pool but were unable to resuscitate him, De Anda said.
The Rialto police department is conducting a drowning investigation and De Anda said there were no preliminary signs of foul play.
King became a national figure in discussions on race and police brutality after he and some friends were stopped by Los Angeles police on March 3, 1991, after a high-speed chase.
King was beaten by baton-wielding officers while a bystander filmed them. When the officers were cleared of brutality charges, riots broke out in Los Angeles, resulting in 53 deaths and an estimated $1 billion in damage.

Rodney King, whose beating by police led to massive rioting in Los Angeles in 1992, was found dead at the bottom of a pool at his California home on Sunday. He was 47.
King's fiance, Cynthia Kelley, found him in the pool at his home in Rialto, about 55 miles east of Los Angeles, and called police at 5:25 a.m., according to TMZ.
Police pulled King's lifeless body from the pool and attempted to revive him, CNN reported. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 6:11 a.m.
Investigators said it appeared King drowned, and there were no early signs of foul play.
Details about the death were still murky, but sources told TMZ that Kelley said King spent Saturday at the house drinking and smoking marijuana, and that she went to bed without him at 2:00 a.m.

Oh well, great minds think alike eh?

Certainly the whole beating and subsequent trial followed by the riots are hugely significant moments in the latter half of the twentieth century, I'd say.

Unfortunate. I heard an interview of him around the anniversary of the riots. Seemed like a nice guy.

Unfortunately, the taxpayers of LA were forced to compensate him for the abuses he suffered when it should have been the cops union who should have paid.
