I agree - that climate change nonsense was not needed.
Other than that, it was quite a good opening ceremony. I was just annoyed that I missed the lighting of the caulfron.
The Opening Ceremony started at midnigfht UK time and finished about 4am UK time. I watched all the singing and dancing - including that clever bit, during the segment where it showed life starting on Earth and then the Brazilian rainforest being created, when a city started springing up out of the ground (it was actually clever 3D visual effects) and people were leaping from building to building - and then the athletes' parade into the Maracana but then when they were doing those long, boring speeches afterwards and the oaths I started feeling really tired. I kept saying: "Hurry up and light the cauldron!" I was desperate for them to light it so I can see it and then go to bed. Instead, that's when the carnival started - when an actual Rio carnival came into the stadium. And it was at that big that I couldn't hold on. Everything just went black for an indeterminable amount of time and then, some time later, I woke up to be confronted by BBC News 24. And I realised then that I'd fallen asleep and I missed the lighting of the cauldron. I checked the time and it was about 4:15am, so I'd only been asleep for about half an hour. But I missed the lighting of the Olympic cauldron.
It should have been Brazilian football legen Pele lighting the cauldron, but he pulled out at the last minute due to ill-health. So Brazilian tennis star Gustavo Kuerten lit it instead.
As for the sport today, three-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome is Britain's gold medal hope.
And not only have the Olympics started, but the new English football season also starts today! So a great weekend for sport.
During London 2012, the football season didtn't start until just after the Olympics finished.
