if there was a profit that could be made out of it the circus would still be going strong
Of course it would. It's called the free-market. And Since more and more people object to animals being in held captivity for no real good reason, on top of the bad rep for other forms of animal cruelty, circuses are falling by the wayside.
I feel similarly about all those Seaworld-type places. I wish lack of money would kill those businesses off too.
Even zoos I have a bit of an issue with. The only animals that should be in zoos are those that are rescues that can't be rehab'd back into the wild, rescues of infant animals that likely can't be set free into the wild, and animals that are at extreme risk of extinction. And they should be strictly monitored to make sure the animals are healthy, although some already do take good care of their animals.
