Let's restore our anthem:
God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.
Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign.
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen.
Or if we don't want to go too far back, there is always this:
In days of yore, from Britain’s shore,
Wolfe, the dauntless hero, came
And planted firm Britannia’s flag
On Canada’s fair domain!
Here may it wave, our boast, our pride,
And join in love together,
The Thistle, Shamrock, Rose entwine,
The Maple Leaf forever.
Refrain
The Maple Leaf, our emblem dear,
The Maple Leaf forever!
God save the King and Heaven bless
The Maple Leaf forever!
At Queenston Heights and Lundy’s lane
Our brave fathers side by side
For freedom’s right and loved ones dear
Firmly stood and nobly died.
And those dear rights which they maintained
We swear to yield them never
Our watchword evermore shall be
The Maple Leaf forever.
Refrain
Our fair dominion now extends
From Cape Race to Nootka Sound;
May peace forever be our lot
And plenteous store abound;
And may those ties of love be ours
Which discord cannot sever,
And flourish green o’er Freedom’s home
The Maple Leaf forever.
Refrain
On merry England’s far-famed land
May kind Heaven sweetly smile;
God bless old Scotland evermore
And Ireland’s Emerald isle.
Then swell the song both loud and long,
Till rocks and forest quiver;
“God save our King and Heaven bless
The Maple Leaf forever!”
Refrain
If that's still too far back, then how about:
Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Or this:
" O Canada! Our fathers' land of old
Thy brow is crown'd with leaves of red and gold.
Beneath the shade of the Holy Cross
Thy children own their birth
No stains thy glorious annals gloss
Since valour shield thy hearth.
Almighty God! On thee we call
Defend our rights, forfend this nation's thrall,
Defend our rights, forfend this nation's thrall."
Hmmm... it would seem that changing our anthem is a long-established tradition. I say keep our traditions alive and change that anthem!
