Money, love, obsession, greed and hatred, were the reasons why a young Markham woman hired thugs to have her parents brutally killed, a jury in a first-degree murder trial heard Wednesday.
Jennifer Pan, 27, sat calmly in a glass-enclosed prisoner’s box as prosecution told of the last harrowing moments of her mother’s life as she begged and pleaded with three armed men to spare her beloved daughter before she was shot to death.
Pan and four other men — her lover, Daniel Wong, Eric Carty, Lenford Crawford and David Mylvaganam — are charged with the first-degree murder of Pan’s mother, Bich Pan and the attempted murder of her father, Hann Pan, both refugees from Vietnam.
Court heard how the armed men held the parents at gun-point, dragged them to the basement, and shot them in their quiet Markham home in a staged home invasion on Nov. 8, 2010. The mother was shot once in the back and twice in the head, the father was shot in the face and shoulder but survived.

Resentment is an insidious unhealthy emotion. The 'living rent-free in someone's head' thing.

Constantly dwelling on someone or some thing to point where you're thinking about them away from work, school, the golf club or even online. When something like that has so much control over your emotions, seek help man.

Brother believed sister's lies, murder trial told

Jennifer Pan’s brother was oblivious to the string of lies and deception his beloved sister strung to her family — until after she was charged with hiring armed thugs to kill their parents, a court heard Monday.
Pan, 27, and four men are on trial charged for the first-degree murder of her mom, Bich Pan, and the attempted murder of her father, Hann Pan.
On Nov. 8, 2010, the parents were held at gunpoint and ordered to the basement of their Markham home, where the mother was shot in the back and head and the father was shot in the back and face but miraculously survived.
The Crown has alleged Pan staged the home invasion so that she could be with the man she was obsessed with — Daniel Wong, also in the prisoner’s box — and share the inheritance left from her parents’ lucrative lifestyle.

Hann Pan was awakened suddenly with a gun barrel pushed to his face, a jury heard Tuesday.
His daughter, Jennifer Pan, 27, is accused of hiring armed thugs to murder her parents in their Markham home on Nov. 8, 2010.
Jennifer Pan and four men — her lover Daniel Wong, Eric Carty, Lenford Crawford and David Mylvaganam — have all pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and attempted murder.
The accused woman’s mother, Bich Pan, 53, died after being shot three times. Her father was shot in the face and back but survived.

Father tells jury how he was shot in his Markham home

As they sat quivering in fear on a couch in their basement, Hann Pan and his wife Bich Pan were ordered to put a blanket over their heads so that armed men could shoot them in the head and face, a jury heard Wednesday.
The couple thought they were the victims of a home invasion in the Markham home on Nov. 8, 2010.
But it is the Crown’s theory that the daughter and Wong were in a relationship that Hann Pan didn’t approve of, so she hired the men to kill her parents allowing her to claim her inheritance and marry Wong.
Bich was shot three times in the back and head while Hann was shot in the face and back but miraculously survived.
Now on trial for hiring the men to kill them is their daughter, Jennifer Pan, 27, and four other men, her lover, Daniel Wong, Eric Carty, Lenford Crawford and David Mylvaganam. All have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and attempted murder.

There was a minor insurance policy she would have received if both were dead. I guess the father living kind of threw a big monkey wrench in her plans.

and she would probably only have received half of it anyway...

Earlier in the day, Pan appeared emotional while telling court he was a Vietnamese refugee and came to Canada and worked long hours as a tool and die maker so that his son and daughter could have a good life.

Accused killer looked 'very, very sad,' dad testifies
By Tracy McLaughlin ,Special to QMI Agency

NEWMARKET - The shadowy dark figures of three men can be seen entering Hann Pan’s Markham home on a surveillance video played to a murder trial jury Monday.
On any other day, it might look like friendly visitors — but on this night, the men were armed and ready to kill, the Crown says.
Moments before they entered, a light in a study upstairs flicked on and off.
It is the Crown’s theory that Jennifer Pan flicked on that light as a signal and unlocked the door for the men she hired to execute her parents in order to secure an inheritance.
Pan, 27, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the killing of her mother, Bich Pan, 53, and to the attempted murder of her father, Hann Pan, 60.
Bich Pan was executed point-blank with three bullets to her head and back, and the accused woman’s father survived after being shot in the face and back.
For the third full day, Hann Pan was under the microscope as he testified about the events on Nov. 8, 2010.
That night he woke up with a gun to his face by a man who ordered him downstairs with his wife, Pan testified.
The witness told court he saw his daughter in the hallway, whispering softly to one of the armed men and she was not tied up.
“I suggest to you, sir, that her hands were tied behind her back,” said Jennifer Pan’s defence lawyer, Paul Cooper.
“No,” answered Pan.
While he and his wife were held at gunpoint, he saw his daughter again with the same armed man, he said.
“I saw her. Her face looked very, very sad,” said Pan. “I think the other person was trying to calm her down.”
Cooper noted Pan’s observations didn’t match up with what he told police when he came out of coma days after the shooting — that he believed his daughter had been a hostage.
“I love her,” he answered. “How could I say a bad thing about her?”
Pan told the jury how he escaped Vietnam as a political refugee to come to Canada to find a life of freedom. He worked long, hard hours of overtime as a tool and die maker to provide the best for his daughter and his son, who is now a mechanical engineer.
He said he was devastated when he learned his daughter had been lying to him for four years, claiming she was studying at university and had graduated as a pharmacist — but was secretly living in Ajax with co-accused Daniel Wong, whom her father did not approve of.
The trial continues.
In a photo exhibited during her murder trial, Jennifer Pan is seen in her pyjamas after a police interview, hours after her parents were shot Nov. 8, 2010.

That bitch should never again see the light of day! Just spend her time in a bare cell with absolutely no amenities, just time to think about what she's done.

Shooting victim's memory questioned at trial
By Tracy McLaughlin ,Special to QMI Agency
First posted: Tuesday, April 01, 2014 08:39 PM EDT | Updated: Tuesday, April 01, 2014 08:57 PM EDT
NEWMARKET - Hann Pan feebly told police the well-muscled man who shot him in the face was six-feet tall, after waking from a coma in hospital, a jury heard Tuesday.
“He was same size as you,” Pan told a police officer during a hospital room interview that was videotaped and played for the jury.
He pointed to the tall detective as he tried to describe the armed men who wounded him and shot his wife, Bich Pan, 53, dead at point-blank range in their Markham home Nov. 8, 2010.
The Crown alleges that Pan’s 27-year-old daughter, Jennifer Pan, hired men to kill her parents.
Jennifer Pan, Daniel Wong, Eric Carty, Lenford Crawford and David Mylvaganam have each pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and attempted murder.
On the witness stand for his fourth day, Hann Pan said he could not look at the video that shows him in bandages and in a neck brace.
“I did not want to look,” said Pan. “It rekindled the bad memory.”
The jury also watched a second video taken a month after the shooting where Pan pointed to a photograph of the man who allegedly woke him in the middle of the night with a gun to his face.
“I think that’s him ... But I am not sure,” Pan says in the video.
The photograph was of Mylvaganam, who sat next to Jennifer Pan in the prisoner’s box.
In an attempt to show Pan was mistaken, defence lawyer Peter Badwen invited Mylvaganam to step out of the prisoner’s box to stand next to the detective he had said was the same height. There was a silence in the court as accused killer stood beside York Regional Police Det. Steven McDonald, who — at six-feet tall — towered over him.
“Mr. Pan,” said Badwen. “The detective stands at least a full head taller than Mr. Mylvaganam.”
Pan appeared to become frustrated with the questioning.
“It was only a guess,” said Pan. “I only had a few minutes ... It does not mean that I lied to the court.”
Pan recounted to the jury how two armed men held him and his wife at gunpoint, ordered them to the basement, and shot them. He said he recalled seeing his daughter whispering with a third man.
The Crown alleged Jennifer Pan hired men to kill her parents so she could secure an inheritance and marry Wong, whom her father did not approve of.
David Mylvaganam is a co-accused charged with first-degree murder of Bich Pan and attempted murder of Hann Pan.

Accused repeatedly lied to parents, murder trial hears
By Tracy McLaughlin ,Special to QMI Agency First posted: Wednesday, April 02, 2014 09:56 PM EDT | Updated: Wednesday, April 02, 2014 10:01 PM EDT
Jennifer Pan appeared to be a master of lies and deception, a jury heard Wednesday.
For years she convinced her parents with faked documents that showed she graduated from university and faked paycheques from a pharmacy where she wasn’t employed. She even faked leaving home each day to do volunteer work at Sick Kids — all while her parents glowed with pride.
Now she sits in the prisoners’ box before a jury, accused of designing a faked home invasion and allowing hired thugs into her home to kill her parents, who were both shot in their Markham home and left for dead on Nov. 8, 2011.
Pan pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and attempted murder, along with her boyfriend Daniel Wong, Lenford Crawford; Eric Carty and David Mylvaganam.
In court, the jury looked upon bogus transcripts showing Pan’s A and A+ grades in pharmaceutical courses from University of Toronto, along with a forged letter from the registrar — but she had never set foot on the campus.

Accused watched movies an hour before parents killed, jury hears
By Tracy McLaughlin ,Special to QMI Agency
First posted: Thursday, April 10, 2014 05:20 PM EDT
The woman accused of hiring armed thugs to kill her parents chatted and watched movies with a friend in the same room where her parents would be shot an hour later, a jury heard Thursday.
Charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder, Jennifer Pan, 27, is now on trial with her boyfriend, Daniel Wong, and three other men. All have pleaded not guilty.
Her mother, Bich Pan, 53, was shot three times while her father, Hann Pan, 56, was shot twice in their Markham home Nov. 8, 2010. Despite a bullet to his face, her father survived to tell a different story than the version his daughter told police.
The Crown alleges Pan hired the men to stage a home invasion and kill her parents so that she could have her inheritance and marry Wong, because her parents did not approve of him.
On the witness stand, two former boyfriends testified Pan seemed normal the day of the shooting.

Jury hears Jennifer Pan's police interview

Jennifer Pan sighs and stammers as she is asked to stand up and demonstrate how she managed to call 911 with her hands tied behind her back after intruders shot her parents in a grueling four-hour videotaped police interview watched by a jury Friday.
Pan, 27, is now on trial with her boyfriend, Daniel Wong, and three other men, all charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.
The Crown contends that Pan and Wong hired men to stage a home invasion and kill her parents so they could claim her inheritance.
Her mother, Bich Pan, 53, was shot three times at close range while her father, Hann Pan, 56, was shot twice but survived the Nov. 8, 2010 attack.
During the interview Pan speaks in a timid, squeaky voice and occasionally dabs her nose with a tissue as she gives her account of how she was in her upstairs bedroom chatting on the phone when the armed men entered her home.

Jury sees 2nd Jennifer Pan interrogation video
By Tracy McLaughlin ,Special to QMI Agency
First posted: Monday, April 14, 2014 09:54 PM EDT | Updated: Monday, April 14, 2014 10:11 PM EDT
NEWMARKET - When Jennifer Pan continuously mixes up pieces of her story to police on how her parents were shot, a detective finally asks her if she is lying, a jury heard Monday.
Pan, 27, is now on trial with her boyfriend, Daniel Wong, and three other men, all charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.
The Crown contends that Pan and Wong hired men to stage a home invasion and kill her parents so they could claim her inheritance.
Her mother, Bich Pan, 53, was shot three times at close range while her father, Hann Pan, 56, was shot twice but survived after three armed men walked into their Markham home Nov. 8, 2010.
Just three days after her mother was killed, Jennifer Pan is asked to come in for a second interview with York Regional Police. Throughout the four-hour process, the video shows Pan taking deep, shivering breaths as she is asked to tell her story not once, but several times, and once even backwards from the end to the beginning.
Pan speaks in a whimpering voice, but there are no tears as she tells the detective that one of the men held a gun on her upstairs while two others ordered her parents to the basement and shot them. At one point she tells him she was ordered to sit cross-legged, and another time she says she was ordered to kneel, but she was never harmed.
“So the natural concern is, why would they leave you alone?” Det.-Sgt. Randy Slade asks. “Why would they not do the same to you?”
“The only thing I can think of is they said I co-operated,” Pan answers.
“So this isn’t some evil plot that you thought up?” Slade says.
“Oh my God no,” Pan answers in a quiet voice as she holds her hand to her heart.
“Because you know, Jennifer, we are in the process of checking … it will be very easy to find any flaws.”
At that point the officer leaves the interview room for several minutes and Pan begins nervously panting, pacing and wringing her hands. She then sits down and covers her face with her hands and begins to rock back and forth.

Jury sees accused murderer's police interview
By Tracy McLaughlin ,Special to QMI Agency
First posted: Wednesday, April 16, 2014 06:15 PM EDT | Updated: Wednesday, April 16, 2014 06:37 PM EDT
NEWMARKET - In her sixth hour of intense questioning by police, Jennifer Pan slowly began to crumble under the constant pressure.
In the videotaped interviews played for the jury Wednesday, Pan begins to whimper as she constantly mixes up small details of how her parents where shot by armed men who invaded their Markham home.
Pan, 27, is now on trial with her boyfriend, Daniel Wong, and three other men, all charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.
Her parents were ordered to cover their heads with a blanket on Nov. 8, 2010 while Bich Pan, 53, was fatally shot three times at close range and her father, Hann Pan, 56, was shot twice but survived.
The Crown contends that Pan and Wong hired men to stage a home invasion and kill her parents so they could claim her inheritance.
After an initial interview on the night of the shooting, just hours after her mother is dead, Pan is questioned by police and released. Within days she is brought in two more times for a total of eight more hours of questioning by York Regional Police.
“Why would these guys shoot your parents but not hurt you?” a detective asks in the interview room.
“I don’t know,” she whimpers in a small, barely audible voice, with her head tucked down and her arms held tight to her body as she hunches in the chair. “They said because I co-operated.”
Pan meekly agreed when the detective counters that her parents also did what they were told.
“Why would these men leave an eye witness?” the detective asked.
“I don’t know,” Pan whimpered.
During breaks she is seen nervously pacing the floor, wringing her hands and pulling at her hair.
Later the detective backs off and asks questions about Pan’s life. She tells how her parents had high expectations for her and put her in skating, karate and she became an accomplished piano player.
But in her late teens she became depressed, she said.
“I started to cut myself,” she said, pointing to her arms. “It felt like … it helped distract from the pain.” She said she contemplated suicide but never went through with it.
Her parents were strict and would not allow her to date Wong, so she dated him on the sly, the jury heard earlier in the trial.
By the time she was 23, Pan had been living a complete lie, she admitted, and had told her family she graduated from university and was working as a pharmacist, when she was really living with Wong in Ajax.
Wong helped her buy a faked graduation certificate for $500 off the Internet, she said. Even her friends and relatives were fooled.
The trial continues.
