The homeless man — James — I met camping out near the Toronto Eaton Centre on Boxing Day said something that made sense about the alarming growth in street sleepers and encampments in downtown Toronto.
“All these condos going up are pushing the homeless out in the open,” he said.
“There’s nowhere for us to hide anymore.
(And our LIE-beral minded govt is also creating a two tier homeless shelter system with illegals and assorted refugees in one place and lunatics and drug addicts in yet another place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
“This is one of the last places we can come to hide,” he added, pointing to Trinity Church.
It did not escape my attention as I’ve jogged the entire length of Yonge St. from Bloor St. — and walked it on Boxing Day — that there are umpteen condo projects under construction.
I might also note that this is Cllr. Kristyn Wong-Tam’s ward — the same councillor who along with her NDP twin Joe Cressy, has been busy wringing her hands since winter began (and even before) about declaring homelessness in Toronto a national crisis.
With all the seriousness she gives to such topics so people think she really, really cares, she also pushed through a motion at the last council meeting of the year to ask the federal government to immediately fund and accelerate development of an Emergency Housing Allowance Fund to quickly move people out of shelters into permanent housing.
I guarantee it was window dressing, even though those in the homeless industry were celebrating her alleged concern.
(The madness of the LIE-beral minded social justice warriors is on full display here as on one hand they whine about the high cost of housing and then look for ways to dump MORE TAXES on those trying to buy housing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
But if Wong-Tam were so concerned — ditto for Joe Cressy — they’d be pushing the epidemic of developers in their wards building the kind of phallic towers we are seeing to include deeply-affordable units in them.
They wouldn’t just be pushing — they’d be insisting, if they truly cared about preventing additional people from falling into homelessness.
They’d also be allocating tens of millions of dollars from their Section 37/45 slush funds - monies developers contribute for density and height benefits - to deeply affordable housing.
(WE are already dealing with record levels of debt that it will take MULTIPLE GENERATIONS to pay off - assuming we don’t end up in a civil war between haves and have nots - with the fight ending after govt “writes off” the debts - as was done with some Greek debt and with the $2.8 billion dollars that LIE-berals had loaned to GM and Chrysler and despaired of ever collecting back again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(LIE-berals seem to think that OUR MONEY is worthless - but that THEIR GRAVY IS SACRED - and also they believe that LIE-berals will be IMMUNE to whatever fiscal challenges come along!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
But if you look at the breakdown of expenditures made by Wong-Tam (provided in a city report from September,) she dedicated a mere $4.2-million of the $61-million she got from developers from 2016-18 to affordable housing.
That’s just 6%.
However she did provide all kinds of money to LGBT causes including $44,015 for rainbow-coloured pedestrian crossing areas on Church St.
Cressy gave about 10% of the $39-million he got from developers to affordable housing between 2016 and 2018, which is only slightly better.
It’s not surprising but a great indicator of how committed they really are to helping the homeless.
(Oh but the FIRST PRIORITY of all good LIE-berals is to BUY VOTES from civil service union HOGS and specially selected social pressure groups - and that takes LOTS of gravy - so feeding HOGS is a PRIORITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
But it’s not just the great disconnect between the brand spanking condos with walls of glass being built downtown and the tents that are now appearing at every corner near them.

(In older less indebted times it was illegal to be a “vagrant” and cops would round up such people - but those days are GONE!! LIE-berals object to spending THEIR GRAVY either to lock up criminals or to hospitalize crazy people and addicts!!!!!!!!)
Refugees and asylum seekers are occupying 36% of the shelter spaces — in their case in hotel rooms or for 200 of them in the $1-million per month airy well-lit former North York Hydro building on Yonge St.
Hardcore homeless are being shoved 100 at a time into airless $2.5-million Sprung warehouses in Liberty Village or on Strachan Ave. where beds are so close together diseases and illnesses are rampant, as is theft.
As James noted to me on Boxing Day, he finds it safer to sleep on the streets.
(That mantra of “it`s safer sleeping in the street is an old and well used one” and thus is probably TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
There was a time years ago when I first started studying the homeless problem in Toronto that I thought those sleeping rough didn’t want to go into shelter because they couldn’t take their drugs or booze.
But since harm reduction programs are now available at Toronto’s shelters and drug dealers seem to be welcomed outside many of the front doors, I have come to the conclusion that street sleepers like James simply don’t want to be warehoused.
(Some years back there was a Toronto controversy when it was discovered that some shelters WERE BREWING THEIR OWN WINE KITS - and handing out the product as bait to homeless people - to keep them indoors and restrict aggressive panhandling!! And rationing out the wine kept them more sober than normal!!!!!!!!!)
Trouble is, the increase in encampments on major downtown street corners is not symbolic of a growing city as the mayor and his sycophants at City Hall would lead us to believe.
It is a sign of growing decay — a laissez faire attitude by our politicians (and sadly many in the media) and sheer political ineptitude.
(TRUE DAT!! And the growing violence and the ever increasing number of illegals and drug addicts and hordes of UNTREATED mental patients and the army of homeless who see no way to remedy their situation - coupled with the rash of dangerous apartment fires and regular flooding of streets after even moderate rains - plus the soaring debt levels are ALL signs of a system under HUGE STRAIN!!!!!!!!)
