I was searching through some old magazines a few days ago and found a Canadian band from 1973 called Jason. There was a photo, and looking at it,thought I saw a young Red Green!Well.it was him[in his real persona of Steve Smith]. He was singing and playing keyboards in this 5 person pop band called Jason and his wife,Monagh, also sang in it. This group was from Grimsby,Ont. And,he did have the beard even then.

Why does if take an American Television Network PBS to put out a proper biography of a Canadian institution?

:?

Born in Toronto, Steve Smith and his wife Morag left Jason in 1974, and by 1978 began a nine year run of Smith & Smith, a music-based comedy show produced at CHCH-TV.

Although the entertainment business had always been a weekend hobby, Steve went full time in 1981 when he began touring Canada and the U.S. in a rock band called Jason. In 1974, he and his wife left the band to form the comedy duo of "Smith & Smith", opening for such entertainers as Rick Nelson, Roy Orbison, Al Martino, Helen Reddy, Martin Mull, and more. In 1978, "Smith & Smith" began a successful run on Canadian television with their own series which ran for nine years. It was during this period that Steve's most popular alter ego "Red Green" was created. Steve wrote and produced all 195 episodes. "Smith & Smith" won several awards including the Iris Award at NATPE '85 in San Francisco.

So...he started touring with the band in 1981, but then in 1974 left the band to start Smith&Smith...hmmm
