It is a well known fact (amongst immigration researchers) that first generation immigrants make less money (on average) than native born citizens.

It is just as well known that second generation immigrants make more money (on average) than native born citizens.

The first generation are glad to be here, know what they have to do to work, and their kids reap the benefit of being born here and know more of the ins and outs of the country from day one. This advantage may decline though as ethnic ghettos increase in number and size as less integration occurs. What was conventional wisdom in the old days may not be in the future due to jet travel and the internet.

Do you consider the Chinatown in Vancouver to be an ethnic ghetto?

Sure, it's a famous one. It was called the largest Chinatown in Canada years ago and it was no big deal. But it's not a ghetto like it used to be as Asians are assimilating in a way they weren't permitted to decades ago. Ghetto means isolation from the larger community around you, persecution and hopelessness. Do we want that in Canada? Why would we encourage it?

We don't have to agree with the federal doctrine of multiculturalism, the fed govt is not the Roman Catholic church where opponents are heretics and can be excommunicated or worse. What seemed like a nice feel good idea years ago, has become a guillitine to debate about it.

It only makes sense that recent immigrants would make less than the avg Canadian, they are mostly brought here to do the jobs Canadians will not do.
We should be more selective on which countries we immigrate people from.

Not so, Since the crash in the Irish housing market in 2008, many skilled tradespeople are coming to Canada, an Irish plumber worked on the pipes in my basement.
TheSpec - Canadian immigration feeling the luck o

People from Asia and Africa are taking those undesireable jobs and no jobs to increase unemployment, as unskilled jobs are getting fewer and fewer in this information age economy.
