"Cracker" is not a racial insult, it's a cultural insult. It refers to ignorant, uneducated white Southerners with only a passing acquaintance with shoes and none at all with dentistry.
No-one would call, for example, Vice-President George H.W. Bush a cracker, where as plenty of racist assholes, including Salty Walty, would call Secretary Powell a ni**er.
