triedit, if I were you, I'd talk to your son's coach and his pediatrician.
Frankly, as far as I'm concerned, if there's any chance they're going to get hit hard enough to cause damage (I have had a friend suffer a rupture), then they ought to be wearing one. Just be kind and spring for a properly fitted one every year. Making a kid play in a poorly sized cup is painful and mean!
His coach won't be much help. He is his daddy.
