I think the problem with any debate is that any decission the House or Senate may render has no force behind it. Troop deployments are made by the cabinet and so this upcoming debate is really just an exercise in academia.

That is true, Lotuslander; unless I am mistaken, decisions to deploy the Canadian Forces are made by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., the Governor General of Canada, on the advice of Her Majesty's Privy Council for Canada¹. However, the only body which actively advises Her Excellency is the Canadian Cabinet (which is, technically, a committee within the Privy Council) and, by modern convention, the advice of the Cabinet is currently expressed exclusively to Her Excellency by the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P., the Member for Calgary Southwest and Prime Minister of Canada.

So by convention now, these decisions are made, more or less, by the Prime Minister alone (with, of course, input from the Minister of Defence, I would hope).

bluealberta, I think it would set a dangerous precedent though, to say that the Canadian Forces have more of a mandate to make political decisions (such as of what nature the mission in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is to take on) than the presentParliament Assembled of Canada.

If we deny the right of the House of Commons or the Senate to debate or discuss whatever matters they deem appropriate, then we are denying ourselves democracy, and denying the principle of the supremacy of Parliament — and I think that such would be a very dangerous thing to do.

If the debate had been held at the time of the deployment, I would agree with you. Months and years later, it is a done deal, and how can we now debate whether we should have troops ther or not? They are there, so lets support them, okay? I think it is very important that the troops in the field know that the population of Canada supports them in what they are doing.

May I also say that not having the debate when they were deployed, but now wanting a debate is another example of the liberal and left wing hypocrisy. Sorry, the time time for debate ended when they were deployed.

I suppose the same should be true then in terms of the Civil Marriage Act. The Act has been passed, and rights granted; to drag the Act back into the House of Commons would be hypocrisy, wouldn't it then, bluealberta, contrary to the position of the Conservative Party of Canada?

The liberals used every dirty trick in the book to get this passed, not to mention you are comparing gay marriage to people in the military who are fighing overseas to rebuild a fallen state. There is a difference.

If everyone pulled out of Afghanistan today there would be chaos and a gradual taliban takeover again....not good for a country which had experienced 30 years of warfare.

If gay marriage was disallowed tomorrow no one would die, nothing would happen, the human beings who make up Canada would still have the same rights as each other be them straight or gay.

I was referring, Hank C, to his principle of "once decided, always decided." Don't try to twist my arguments into something that they aren't. I'm not trying to call down the military.

No, I know you are not intentionally trying to "call down" the military. But the principle you are using cannot be applied equally to all situations because of different circumstances, its simply reality, everyone knows that.

Heh.

Glad you're so chipper. In the future, try responding to the intended meaning of the post instead of tearing the God-damned things apart with semantics and technicalities. Might get a decent debate going in one of these threads, if people actually tried.

Before I angrily use my colours to blind you, Hank C.

No offense intended. You just happen to be the only life-form here at the moment.

Yup. Sometimes makes me feel kinda crappy (even at random times, like nausea sort of thing). So my mood suffers. It has probably shone through my posts here on Canadian Content (and elsewhere). Just fair warning. :)
