I was under the impression that the Quebec Liberals would reject bill 14 unconditionally. It looks as though the Liberals are changing their tune....again. Well, I will sit out the next provincial election .... again!!!

Couillard takes softer line on Bill 14
If Parti Québécois proposes amendments, the Liberals will take a look, Couillard says

By Philip Authier, The Gazette

MONTREAL - New Liberal Party leader Philippe Couillard is taking a softer line on the Parti Québécois' new language bill than his party took before his arrival.

Couillard has also reached out to his two leadership campaign opponents, promising Raymond Bachand and Pierre Moreau important functions in his new regime.

At his first news conference since taking over the party Sunday, Couillard faced a barrage of questions from reporters on a range of subjects.

But it was when the language issue came up that he made the nuance.

While explaining that the Liberals still oppose the proposed legislation — Bill 14 — they are nevertheless listening, he said.

"If amendments are presented, we have a responsible parliamentary team," Couillard said at the Liberal's Montreal headquarters on Waverly Ave.

Well, let's say Bill 14 made more exceptions than Bill 101? Not likely under the PQ, but the principle still stands.

And here I thought the PQ would not succeed in passing bill 14 due to it's minority government status. Silly me. From this latest news, the bill will likely pass. All this means to many of us English speaking Quebeckers is that come next election, we are simply not voting.
