New Jersey Voters Say Mandatory Doggie Seat Belts A Good Idea

It’s by a narrow margin, but New Jersey voters actually do support a proposed law that would require dog owners to put their animal in a safety restraint or crate when in the car.

According to today’s Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll, 45 percent of registered voters in the state support the law, with 40 percent opposing it. The bill, introduced by Assemblywoman Grace Spencer last month, would require that pets not traveling in a crate be restrained by a harness or similar device, with violators subject to a $20 ticket and possible animal cruelty charges.

I always buckled my dog in... we used a carabeener to clip her harness to a locked seat belt. She could sit on the seat, had range of movement to sit up or lie down, but she couldn't jump around the cab, and most importantly, in case of an accident, she didn't become 20 razor blades launched past my children's faces.

One serious smack upside the head due to heavy equipment flying around the cab of a truck during a rollover was all I needed to become immensely aware of making sure everything in the cab is secure for the safety of everyone concerned.

We haven't had a dog in the last ten years or so but when we did have a dog, it was always a large
dog. Mostly, we had German Shepherds. An eighty or ninety pound shepherd would be a sizable
missile coming from the backseat in a collision. We used a harness adapted to the seat belt . Thankfully,
we never had a collision.

It always amazes me how many people don't secure their animal when they transport it. Even a small dog can be a dangerous projectile in a crash.

My suggestion to all who are worried about an impact is learn how to drive properly and avoid them. Then there is no worries. As for the law, well when they hand me the ticket I'm handing it back with the dog attached. Here ya go officer, you're so worried about him he's yours.

I grew up on a farm and we had a single cab truck. dogs and kids rode in the back. No seat belts and no seats either. I am unsure how it would be cruel to not tie a dog down in a car? But i guess that every 1000 dog owners they catch means $20,000 in fines and all the money lawyers will make in legal fees, With the whole country being so far in debt i guess every little bit helps. But Come on, What about the Cats?

You don't get how it's cruel to let an animal be loose in a collision? Really? I know we've kind of focused on the safety to humans aspect, but, animals suffer horrific injuries in car crashes too.
