As his mother lay dying at Balmoral, the then Prince Charles sought solace by foraging for mushrooms on his estate at Royal Deeside.

Time with nature instead of diving into a cask of 14 year single malt is admirable.

Is it? I'd rather do the latter than go out pulling fungi out of the ground.

But each of us grieves in different ways, I suppose. If that's how Charles coped with him about to lose his mother and about to become King after over 70 years waiting for the role then so be it.

After my best friend killed himself by dousing himself in petrol and striking a match back in 2011 my mum discovered his mum playing a game for days on end on an online multiplayer gaming app. She thought it was weird. But I told her that maybe it's part of her grieving process.

People do weird shit when they grieve, or finally get a chance to grieve.

Some go off the rails, & some just turn off and run on autopilot until time permits for them to grieve on their own terms once the crisis passes and they feel they can finally start to safely feel something.

One dude falls into a barrel of whiskey, and another communes with nature, and another goes into the insane asylum, and another just functions until it’s time to safely deal with the process on their own terms.

That fourth dude, don’t cross him until he (or she) have found that release valve, are you might become their release valve.

Of course, Charles couldn't be with his mother continuously as she was on her deathbed. He left other members of his family to grieve with her as he grieved in private as he picked mushrooms. He sought solace in something which we know he loves: nature. But I suspect it wasn't just his mother's death which he was thinking about as he picked those mushrooms. He was probably also thinking about what he was about to become. He had over 70 years preparing for it but it must have still been overwhelming for him when he realised it's about to happen.
