However, I still cannot for the life of me understand why someone (like Martin) would choose to stay with a Religion that goes against his personal beliefs?
His personal beliefs don't come into play, Nascar Nero. He is, quite simply, representing the views of his party and, through that party, Canadians. Martin has said that he's personally against abortion, for instance, but that his personal views are not relevant in the debate.
As to the government revoking the church's chatitable donation, folks in Canada have a right to give money to anyone they like. Their money has already been taxed, so it cannot be once again taxed, particularly since they are not getting any goods in return, and are simply giving a donation or "gift" to the church.
That's like saying that businesses shouldn't pay tax because their customers already paid tax. It's a non-argument. Poorly thought out and overly simplistic.
Church's are given tax-exempt status becasue they do charitable work, but that status depends on them remaining non-political. Since the Catholic church is refusing to remain non-political, they should have their status pulled. They can then register as a corporation and try to evade the tax laws that way.
