I have had these stats before.

Pretty astounding how much variance from province to province.

I think their should be the population designation for each riding should be the population of all 3 territories.

Each riding gets a MP and a Senator (hopefully elected!)

The territories all get a combined riding for their interests.

The numbers based on population don't add up well, especially with PEI getting 4 seats. I wouldn't combine the Territories but base the number of seats on 100 000 population. When the Territories reach 200 000 they get another seat.

Canada Census - every 10 years.

Thats how the seats are distributed for MPs.

Senate is by region.

Senate doesn't even care about population.

10 Seats in New Brunswick and 6 in Alberta.................

I totally agree that Ontario and Alberta are under represented in the House. They should look at redistributing the MPs to a more equal rep by pop as the House was designed.

As for the Senate, I would disagree with your numbers. The Senate is suppose to be a balance of power to the House. One of the ways it is suppose to balance the House is the Senate is suppose to be rep by region (does a poor job at it). The idea is that a region of Canada who is heavily populated will not carry the balance of power in both the upper and lower House. Unfortunately, the current breakdown of seats is a wacked out formula that combines rep by pop and region. It makes little sense and needs to be updated.

My idea is to have 5 senators from each province and one from each territory. This would make the total number of senators 53 which is about half of the current Senate (money saver!!). These senators should be elected so whomever controls the cabinet in the House doesn't cherry pick senators for the house.

By making these changes, the Senate will be an effective balance of power to the House.
