SIMCOE -- A man was given an 18-month jail sentence Tuesday for sticking a pistol in his elderly mother's mouth and threatening to kill her unless she admitted she was abusive to him during childhood.
After jumping into an argument between his brother and mother in November, Henryk Ostrowski pulled out a .22 calibre Beretta and told his mother it contained two bullets -- one for her and one for himself.
His mother told him what he wanted to hear and Ostrowski then left the room, a Simcoe courtroom heard.
The incident was "out of character" for his client, said lawyer Mike McArthur.
Questions surround whether the gun was loaded. When Ostrowski was arrested, the gun clip was empty but he had two bullets in his pocket. The bullets wouldn't fit the clip but could have been loaded manually into the gun.
Judge Kevin Sherwood said Ostrowski is "an intelligent, articulate person who can understand the problems he is facing" and is a "candidate" for rehabilitation.
Assistant Crown Attorney Lynette Fritzley said Ostrowski "fully confessed" to the act in a telephone call after the incident to his girlfriend and was "proud of what he had done."
He used the gun, said Fritzley, to "extort" a confession from his mother "that she was not fair to him as a child."
Ostrowski told the court he had "never manhandled a woman in his life" and wanted to "apologize for what I have done."
He had previously pleaded guilty to unauthorized possession of a firearm, uttering threats, and using a firearm during an indictable offence. The last charge carries a minimum sentence of one year.
Ostrowski was given 45 days credit for time served.

I coulda got him off. Called it "alternative dispute resolution," gotten a "counselor" or "consultant" to sign on that it was a legitimate tactic, and he's home free.

This occurrence brings up something I am hearing about more often lately. Our society is opening up regarding abuse suffered during childhood in people of my generation and older. My generation were not encouraged to speak of such abuses in fact there was shame attached to such experiences because blame was attached to the victim. It still is in our society in many instances.

What I am seeing occur now is that as these abusers age their kids don't want to be bothered with them in many instances. The abusers are old and have lost their power so to outsiders the kids now 50, 60 something seem heartless. But there is a reason for that.

Currently there are some friends of ours whose dad is quite ill. To me he is a nice old guy. The family does visit but they are all in town and someone could see him every day. They don't. When you give his wife a ride to the hospital she wants to leave 20 minutes into the visit.

Everything is beginning to surface.

It feels strange to witness such dynamics.

I coulda got him off. Called it "alternative dispute resolution," gotten a "counselor" or "consultant" to sign on that it was a legitimate tactic, and he's home free.
I actually think that would be enough.

He got what he needed.

It's over.

What?

WHAT???

18 months!!

Possession of a restricted weapon without authorization is a MANDATORY THREE YEARS!

So, some sap that happens to have the pistol grandpa brought back across the pond gets 3 years for nothing......but stick it in an old lady's mouth you get 18 months??

Insanity.
