Tree was likely at the end of it's life anyways. Not a fresh cut, may have fell down and got cut up.

No, each "area" of forest has a mother tree. It's that tree and the fungal network along and below ground that controls the flow of water and nutrients to the surrounding trees. In fact, a mother tree can recognize her own saplings among other saplings, even among those of the same species. For example, when water is in short supply a mother tree will typically make sure her own saplings get the water and nutrients they need first.
