Dover Castle is surrounded by walls and it was never conquered. The Great Wall of China did a fine job in keeping semi-nomadic invaders out. Large scale invasions were another matter but semi-nomadic invaders were the primary concern at the time.
As for the Maginot Line, it was intended to defend against a military invasion. Are you suggesting that America is actually being invaded? And if the French had actually understood the role of armoured units, Germany's invasion of France would have been a failure. The French army was bigger, better equipped and their tanks outclassed anything the Germans fielded in 1940. The French were beat simply because their tactics and war doctrine were outdated by then.


It is ironic to think though that despite Hitler's successful plan for an end run around the Maginot Line, he still wasted countless resources building his vaunted Atlantic Wall only to have it breached in a matter of hours.
