Prince Edward Island is looking into permanent daylight saving time, but Premier Rob Lantz wants to get a consensus with the other Atlantic provinces.
Lantz spoke about the possibility during May 12 question period in the legislature, taking a question from Opposition Leader Hal Perry.
Lantz said he wants the region to stick together on any possible change, and the government would also consult the public.
“It does come up every spring, every fall, when we fall back, spring forward.”
Perry asked if he had already spoken with the regional premiers, noting Nova Scotia has a bill under discussion that would also require consensus with other regional provinces.
He also asked about any studies done on the effects of time changes in P.E.I., calling for them to be released if they exist.
“Islanders raise concerns every year about the impact that time changes have on sleep, on health, productivity and public safety,” Perry said.
Lantz said there were no government studies on the impact, but he had seen the effect himself.
“Certainly when I was raising young children there was an impact on our household a couple of times a year where it would throw off their sleep schedule, throw off mine as well,” he said. “It is a disruption to our daily routine, our sleep schedules, so in that sense it does have an effect.”
In recent weeks, a movement towards ending the twice-annual time change has been growing across the country. Some provinces have committed to permanent daylight saving time, while others have expressed support without full commitment.
