It might be time for Canada to unilaterally bow out of NAFTA and the FTA, unilaterally drop all intentional trade barriers, and then start negotiations with other states to remove unintentional trade barriers like incompatible regulations in different areas for example.

The US could enjoy the drop in Canada's intentional barriers but until Trump is out, the US would have to live with that superficial level of trade because there is no point negotiating with an Orangutan.

We have a Ford Assembly line just a couple of kilometers from here. It will be interesting ...
If the intention will be to move production to the US, it will take years for Ford to react and re-tool a plant down there. In the mean time, the American consumer pays a levy to his own government.

Back in the Autopact days, a large fraction of cars sold in Canada were made in Canada. We can dust that off but this time around, it may not be American marques being made here for Canadian consumption and the Big Three loses even more market share.

MAGA!

If Canada unilaterally drops all intentional trade barriers (except maybe for public-policy reasons like taxing alcohol, nicotine, or fuel for health or environmental reasons I suppose), then it allows Canada to fast forward in trade negotiations with other states. Instead of haggling over tariffs, we can discuss harmonizing regulations since other states would happily at least reduce tariffs against Canada. Some might reduce tariffs against the US too. But those who don't would make the US less attractive. If Canada could open its markets to the world while Trump is engaging in a trade war, Canada would suddenly look more attractive to investors.

Trump appears to have other criteria well beyond trade. This is not a rational process.

So we should play him for the fool he is. Our provinces should unilaterally drop all intentional trade barriers between one another too. No wasting time 'negotiating' and haggling. Just unilaterally drop them. Then the provinces could discuss harmonizing regulations instead. Let's get internal trade going.

Right, but Trudeau and Freeland trying to shove their virtue signaling bullshit into an already existing trade agreement and then throwing a hissy fit when Trump tells them to piss off is completely rational.
Funny how when China told Prince Bouncy Castle to piss off after he tried his virtue signaling sunny ways bullshit with them, Trudeau's response was to still try and negotiate a trade deal.
But Trudeau made it abundantly clear he had zero intention of entering re-negotiations from a position of good faith when his opener of virtue signaling, sunny ways bullshit was non-negotiable.

Now tell us, how was Trump supposed to respond to that shit?

What Trudeau and Freeland said was a "hissy fit"? Good God, do get a grip.
