An article from the Sun newspaper can be found at:

http://www.members.shaw.ca/nspector4/fed1.htm

This can now be found on Norman Spectre's webpage.

Another reason not the trust the government here. Fish farms, where the fish live in a bathtub, are fed pellets, and their shit drops below them. Gee, what a nice environment to grow up in. Sounds healthy. Who would buy this crap? Feed this to your kids? And then's there lice. Yuck. Double yuck. Private and federal corporate PR leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Ban fish farms ASAP.

Wild fish and salmon have to made cheaper and more plentiful, because its better, safer etc. Then that would mean stronger environmental laws and a healther world. Obviously not enough money is made off of this.

Hatcheries are not quite the same as fish farms as far as I understand. There can be some similarities but lakes can be huge, fish farms pens are quite small where the fish live in very close quarters and do not eat live fresh food.

Ok.

How about this.

As opposed to the vast majority of poultry, beef, and pork farms currently in operation?

You do realize the majority of meat in the supermarket comes from industrial farms, and that the mythic "family farm" is just that - a myth.

Oh yeah, industrial farming needs big time work. The "feed" of cattle and other farm animals are pellets too, and used to be from other dead cows. Disgusting.

The media loves a personal story but farms are no longer anymore, they are agribusiness and pursuing profits before public health. Cows are fed drugs to increase their milk production for example, cows now produce several times more milk than a few decades ago. At what cost to the cow's and public health? We are stessing our food animals way too much. Is there a shortage of milk in Canada?

A cow is seen as a piece of machinery, a depreciating asset over time, so it is to be worked as hard as possible by agribusiness.

Fish growing in a bathtub? Around here, it's called the ocean. The fish grow in nets out in the ocean. Big Freakin Deal.

This guy ever been to a fish farm? Doesn't sound like it.

Fish farming - Aquaculture as we call it, does have a lot of different forms. Growing lots of fish in relatively small tubs with close quarters is only one of them. The netted pens in the ocean are another, as is migratory aquaculture (something about migratory fish, and planting them in places, allowing them to migrate, then harvesting them when they return).

At first I was thinking of fish hatcheries, which have tonnes of fish crammed into tubs which are subsequently used to restock lakes. The close quarters isn't a big deal for fish I'm assuming.

Then it seemed you were worried about the health issues. Unfortunately aquaculture of this sort would be no different than mainstream agriculture. If we accept the latter, we have no grounds on which to oppose the former.

Real fish do not eat pellets, nor do they require antibiotics. What do you think happens to that uneaten fish food and excretment 8O Here is a hint  It accumulates on the ocean floor, under those F*****G farms and smothers every living thing and chokes out all life
They are nothing but a blight and a danger to real salmon stocks.

Hit that one on the nail.

Though I dont mind fish farms, its the damage they do to the eco system around the fish farm that is harmful. Look it up. The CBC has a bunch of nice documentaries on it.

Fish farming in small pens is like cattle on the range? Cramped dirty conditions versus the open fresh air? Cattle on ranches with miles to roam and get exercise, to chew grass (instead of cannibalistic cow feed) and living somewhat in their natural state seems not too bad to me. This is sometimes called organic food, stuff that is in big demand these days.

Hatcheries are spawning grounds for fish, then they go back out into the big ocean after they are born. Hatcheries are not cramped and foul fish pens.

Fish pens are the result of a failure of conservation policies around the world.

Like the rice farmers in Bali, aquaculture has been practiced for eons. Once technology replaces traditional methods, it's all down hill from there. On a positive note, tradition has replaced technology in Bali, thanks to the serious ecological and economic consequences from failed rice crops.
