On this day in 1936 King Edward VII dedicated the memorial at Vimy Ridge to the 3598 Canadian soldiers
who lie there. Another 10,602 were wounded. Alas, neither the dedicator or any of the soldiers in that war are still alive.

Believe it or not...theis Yank (meaning me) did a report on the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in WWI. My G-Mother's cousin was killed over there with them. Great story and a great quote from a British General...

"The RNR's attack failed because dead men cannot advance further."

In this battle Eagle, Canadians lost 3598 killed and 10602 wounded but they took Vimy Ridge and killed
20,000 of the enemy.

Edward VII had been dead for a number of years at the time of this dedication. It was Edward VIII (the one that abdicated) who dedicated this memorial.

You are absolutely right. I just didn't get enough ones behind the V.
