Its not so much that he supports abortions based on gender, but that he doesn't want to see the creation of a thought crime. In that way you get someone opposing the ban. I support a person's right to deny the holocaust, but it doesn't mean I am a holocaust denier.
An actor's motivation should never be the only thing separating them from being a criminal. In this case it is much worse than that, because the motivations of another person makes a criminal out of the doctor.

Another impossible to enforce law. How does one determine why a woman wants an abortion? As has been suggested by some in this thread this is probably more about desperate anti-abortionists trying to find some way to ban abortions that any real concern over gender selection.
