If Sid Ryan says Harpers bad, then he has to be good for Canada.
OK, maybe not all of Canada, but his decissions at the UN were right if Sid says they weren't.
Sids got his knickers in a knot because Harpers boys at the UN have not and will not sign off on the Human Rights extension to Indigenous peoples. Thank who ever you want.
This piece, for a number of reasons is flawed. That is why Harper will not sign off on it. These arethe reasons I believe why, and I agree.
The declaration is aimed at ...
Improving the standard of living.
Ok, well as has been pointed out by a number of people here, so much money is tossed out windows in Ottawa, for Natives that they could all live nicely on $40,000 a year. Plus the infrastructure in their communities is already a government paid responsiblity. So that point is moot. But increasing spending on this venture is no gaurantee that there will be any positive effect on the standard of living, with the corruption that continues to this day. Fix that Sid.
Recognizing their right to self determination.
Umm, we pretty much already have that Sid. And Oh look, it's messed up. When all our leaders act in the best interest of our people, only then shall we have the "right" to ask for more "self determination".
Giving them the right to live within their own customs and culture and to preserve it through education delivered in their own languages.
What a wonderful notion, we already do. Not to mention, that if education is delivered exclusively in our Native tongues, that would only further hinder our chances at integrating with the rest of the country and thus furthering a divide the sane amongst us want to bridge.
Recognize the right of indigenous peoples to land claims and resources.
OK, we have that process already. Flawed as it is, it's still there. Do I think we need the UN to force the issue? Perhaps, but I would rather like to see these claims ratified internally.
Resources, well most reserves in Canada that have found resources on or under their respective lands, have succesfully filed claim to and exploited those resourses to their benefit.
Once again proving that not only is Sid Ryan an ass, but the UN is antiquated and well behind the times.
