Nomination of Former P.C. Clerk

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, the Prime Minister of Canada today announced the diplomatic nomination of Alexander Himelfarb, the former Clerk of the Privy Council; he is to become the Ambassador of Canada to the Italian Republic, with concurrect accreditation to the Republic of Albania and the Republic of San Marino; in addition, he is to become the High Commissioner for Canada to the Republic of Malta.

Ottawa, Tuesday, March 7, 2006 —

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the nomination of
Mr. Alexander Himelfarb, former Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet, as Ambassador of Canada to the Italian Republic with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Albania and the Republic of San Marino, and as High Commissioner for Canada to the Republic of Malta.

"I have every confidence that Mr. Himelfarb will represent Canada's interests abroad in an outstanding fashion and further enhance Canada's solid reputation on the international scene when he undertakes his new and important assignment," Prime Minister Harper said.

Alexander Himelfarb? seriously... who was on drugs when they decided to name that one!

It's so decidedly pompous and poncish only someone with a name like that could become a Diplomatic attache.

Is he of Germanic Descent?

Yes, Mr. Himelfarb was born in Germany; he was raised and educated, however, in Toronto. On a related note, the appointment is expected to take effect in August of this year.
