It still isn’t clear if Canadians will require federal permits to bring plastic straws into the country under a proposed national ban.

“The work is going on with respect to the details,” said Helen Ryan, associate assistant deputy environment minister.

Ryan said the first regulations banning single-use items will be detailed by the end of this year, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.

“It sounds like the government has said to industry, ‘You will not produce these,’” said Conservative MP Dan Albas (Central Okanagan-Similkameen, B.C.). “Are you planning on then implementing some sort of system to allow outside-of-Canada product to be brought in?”

“The details on how the bans or restrictions on single-use plastic items have not yet been put forward,” said Ryan, according to the report. “The government has not indicated it will put those types of restrictions in place.”

When 2021 comes to a close six products will be banned under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. These include plastic straws stir sticks, cutlery, six-pack rings, checkout bags and polystyrene food containers.

“All of those things will be put forward in terms of the proposed regulations,” Ryan said.

“If I was a company that sold to the U.S. and employed 50, 60 people, quite frankly I would be terrified in terms of this unknown,” McLeod said.
