Newcastle United have won the 65th League Cup after a deserving victory over record 10-time winners Liverpool in the Final at Wembley.

It's the first time they have won the tournament - currently known as the Carabao Cup for sponsorship reasons - and is their first major domestic trophy since the FA Cup in 1955 and their first major trophy since the European Fairs Cup in 1969.

Burn and Tuchel are all smiles in the England squad

Dan Burn and England manager Thomas Tuchel are all smiles together as the England squad get together for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The photo of the defender and England's new German manager was taken the day after Burn and his Newcastle United team won the League Cup.

Burn is the Geordie hero after his opening goal at Wembley on Sunday evening helped Newcastle United win their first major trophy since 1969.

The giant defender has been named in German Thomas Tuchel's England squad for Friday night's opening 2026 World Cup qualifier against Albania at Wembley. The game will be the German's first as boss of the England team and Burn hopes it will be his first as an England player.

England will then play Latvia, also at Wembley, on Tuesday night.

Tuchel hopes the giant defender's heroics for Newcastle United will be repeated for England.

The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico, with the Final to be held at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 19th July.

England have reached two major Finals in the last four years - losing them both - and Tuchel is hoping he has assembled the players necessary for them to go one better and win their first major tournament since 1966.

"The roof came off!"

Amazing scenes in the great football-mad city of Newcastle as they see their team win their first major trophy since 1969.

The Magpies won the 65th League Cup against the mighty record ten-time League Cup winners Liverpool - who are about to win the league title - to see them lift a major trophy for the first time since Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the Moon.

It's their first major domestic trophy since 1955, the year Churchill resigned as Prime Minister due to ill health.

Premier League

Newcastle United 4-1 Manchester United

Fresh from winning their first major trophy since 1969, and still on a high, Newcastle United today beat the once-mighty Manchester United in the Premier League to go fourth.

Incredibly, Manchester United - record Premier League winners and three-time European Cup winners - languish in 14th place in April.

Meanwhile, the Champions League beckons for the high-flying Magpies.
