New poll puts federal NDP ahead of Tories and Liberals — suggesting Alberta election changed everything

Propelled by a recent resounding win in Alberta, the federal NDP has surged into a three-way tie with the Conservatives and Liberals, new numbers suggest.

Preliminary poll results leaked to the Ottawa Citizen show the NDP leading both the Conservatives and Liberals with 29.2 per cent of voter intention.

The poll, conducted from May 6 to 10, appears to be from national polling firm EKOS.

The Conservatives and Liberals trail at 28.6 and 27.6, respectively.

With a margin of error of 2.7 per cent, the poll suggests the upcoming election will be a three-way horse race between Thomas Mulcair’s NDP, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives, and Justin Trudeau’s Liberals.

The preliminary results indicate that 1,362 Canadians were surveyed, which is about half the sample size of other recent polls by EKOS. It is unclear whether the numbers obtained by the Ottawa Citizen were the final results of the poll or whether the survey was extended.

If the data are accurate, the results debunk months of punditry and previous polls that have repeatedly predicted a two-way battle between the Tories and Grits in the upcoming election.

The new data suggest the NDP experienced a sharp rise in support beginning in late April.

Earlier this month, the NDP scored an historic win in Alberta with leader Rachel Notley ousting the Progressive Conservatives after more than 40 years in power.

The polling results suggest that, like Albertans, Canadians across the country are warming to the orange wave and considering putting the NDP in power for the first time ever.

The sharp uptake in the poll by the NDP is mirrored by a sudden drop in support for the Conservatives and Liberals, who have fought for the lead since Trudeau took the party’s reins.

In the last federal election in 2011, the Conservatives sailed to a majority government while the NDP surged in Quebec, securing the party Official Opposition status in the House of Commons. The Liberals, meanwhile, suffered a colossal loss that has since seen the party re-organize and attempt to rebuild itself.

A federal election is expected this fall.

If it's because of the Alberta election, I can't see it lasting. That doesn't seem like a major shift in the country's ideology. It's just positive press for the NDP.

That's what they said in Alberta before the election..

The Alberta situation had a bunch of polls showing the trend a few days prior to the ejection so it's not analagous.

Though if it does become a trend and NDP win, expect some significant tears.

I, while preferring the cons keep power, would be less upset with an NDP victory than a victory by Justine.

It could be that since the Alberta election was such a shocker that it got major play on every type of media the name 'NDP' is getting a lot of recognition.

If this scenario continues or even grows in the NDP's favour, Junior may re-think that coalition idea.......

Lol

You say that now, but the policies NDP bring will upset you more than the more centrist alternative.

What, you still got a hard on for your wet behinds the ears puppy, JT.

May family have been die hard Liberals for years.. they are voting NDP. I know so many people who were Liberal, who are now in the NDP camp.

They just don't want a snot nosed inexperienced immature punk running the country.

JT is NOT ready to hold office of PM.

Mulcair obviously older than JT, has the political experience that JT lacks.

This next election is between the Cons and the NDP.

Mulcair has more class in his baby finger than JT has in his whole body.

Mulcair a Canadian citizen, born in Canada.. and hold your stupid comments to yourself.

Why should he give up a citizenship he obtained via a marriage to his wife, I wouldn't.

I will always vote Conservative. ;)

I really don't give a flying fu ck where he got the citizenship. He has split allegiances as long as he holds both. As far as I am concerned, you want to sit in the House, you have one citizenship and that is Canadian. If he is unwilling to renounce his French citizenship, then obviously that is more important to him than running this Country.

It's early days yet. Harper has been pissing people off lately on two or three fronts - divulging the identity and whereabouts of troops in Iraq, the Omar Khadr release and possibly abetting crooked Senators. One or more of these things will likely die down within the next 5 months. I don't particularly support much about Harper right now, and I would probably vote for Eliz. May (fat chance) before I'd support either Jr. or Mulcair. Those guys have no interest in the West.

So you're splitting hairs, and defending JT?? Hell JT would make a better Premier of Quebec than a Prime Minister of Canada, that is split allegiances.
