A friend told me about "Lime wire" peer to peer file sharing program, and said that it was legal in Canada.

Seeing what happened with Kaza, I'm cautious, not wanting to get sued; and, can't really get a definite answer as to legalities. People want to use file sharing because they can download and burn info and music, most of it copywrited. That makes the flags go up for me.

Has anyone had any experience with LimeWire, legalities, etc?

Any info much appreciated.

Regards: Ugg.

I should probably knock on wood, but I've been using it for about three yrs, no problems whatsoever.

I did get a warning from Sony studios via sympatico about a movie I downloaded using Morpheius. Got rid of both ASAP!!!!!!!

Re: Status of Downloads in Canada

I have never come across any provision in any Statute that would, as per my own comprehension of the situation, expressly make peer-to-peer sharing unlawful. However, it should be noted that this is a gray area — without laws in effect, it would be unclear as to whether or not the courts would attempt to extrapolate regulations from the existing framework if these networks were brought to court to any serious extent.

Johnny, I used WINMX too. Why did they shut down?
I heard WINMX was shutdown because it was used to connect the World Internet Sex Ring that was in the news a few months ago, the one Edmonton Police exposed.

I'm not sure if that's true but I know it started giving me issues last year in April 2005 and then oneday just went off line..

I have a friend who lives up in Canada and uses limewire, he's never had any problems with using it or gotten into any trouble for it.

WINMX Child Porn Ring
WASHINGTON, March 15 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A private Internet "chat room" used worldwide to facilitate the trading of thousands of images of child pornography -- including streaming videos of live molestations -- was infiltrated in an undercover investigation, resulting in charges against 27 individuals to date in the United States, Canada, Australia and Great Britain, the Department of Justice, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and cooperating international authorities announced today.

This week, indictments and criminal complaints were unsealed in nine U.S. judicial districts in Illinois, Tennessee, Michigan, Nevada, Florida, New York, Arizona and Hawaii, as well as in state court in North Carolina, charging 13 defendants with various offenses including possession, receipt, distribution and manufacture of child pornography. The additional 14 defendants have been charged in other countries -- nine in Canada, three in Australia and two in Great Britain -- in connection with activity in the chat room known as "Kiddypics & Kiddyvids," which was hosted on the Internet through the WinMX software program that also allowed users to engage in "peer-to-peer" file sharing. One of the 27 charged defendants is a fugitive.

This could be the reason WINMX was shutdown. Surely Kazaa and Lime Wire have taken steps to be on the look out for anything like that happening on their systems. Oh Yeah Napster is now free again!

I've used limewire for quit a while with no problems. I know my son has downloaded some movies and such and no one has come knocking on our doors yet.

I've recently started using frostwire which is supposed to be the open source equivalent of limewire pro. Works well.
