The less they know about U.S. history & government, the less appalled they’ll be by recent departures. Bug/feature?
The removal of the requirement is a one-two punch: It robs historical-literacy advocates of valuable evidence for our case at the same time that it signals to teachers and administrators that history and civics are just not taken seriously. Almost certainly, this will cause civic and historical education to decay even further than it has.

And that will hurt colleges, too. Already, college graduates demonstrate remarkable ignorance of U.S. history and government. Without up-to-date information on high school graduates’ civic illiteracy, it will be increasingly hard to convince the more than 80 percent of colleges and universities that do not require U.S. history or government to change their ways.

Judging by the types of people they elect one could think that those tests have been gone for awhile already.

I knew a teacher from the States once who specialized in history and judging
by what he told me I would think these folks are right. History in school there
is not like here.
He told me the student is assisted in arriving at the correct outcome of the event.
In other words the account is predetermined and you will come to that conclusion.
I guess I was lucky I had history teachers that always asked do you accept this
at face value or should you explore it yourself?
There are many accounts of history that are so twisted its led to conspiracy theorists
and more.
History is written by the victors to vanquish the defeated so the words of the headlines
prevail. It does not mean the truth has been written.
History left abandoned comes back to bite us. Beside there are so many interesting
people for students to meet as history is the story of mankind and finding the truth is
as important as meeting the characters. History is the one never ending novel

Those "tests" serve no realistic purpose. Most of the Union teachers in the USA just teach the kids to pass the test. They are largely incapable of actually teaching the subjects that they are supposed to be teaching.

It is an absolute guarantee that any teacher that majored in "Education" is incompetent.
