Effective governing begins with having the courage to make tough decisions for the long-term health of the country, not for immediate political gain, former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney told The Daily Caller’s Ginni Thomas.

“What do you want? Do you want popularity, or do you want leadership?” Mulroney asked. “Because leadership entails the capacity to make tough decisions in the national interest and stick with them, knowing that the payout for America or Canada will only be 10, 15 or 25 years later.”

Many times those decisions are unpopular in the short-term, Mulroney told TheDC’s Ginni Thomas.
“And meanwhile you have to endure the attacks and the unpopularity that comes with having take big and controversial decisions in the national interest,” he explained.

Mulroney was the king of doing what was best for him and his friends. He became
the most hated man in Canada, and I don't think its the type of unity he was looking
for. Yes we were unified we all hated him, remember the election that followed his
disastrous reign? Harper is going to face the same wrath of the people. He has
offended seniors, and students and the middle class. The Conservatives have now
peaked and people will be looking for alternatives. Alternatives may or may not be
hard to find. Mulcair is proving to be interesting, he has not offended anyone yet
and secondly people like him in various parts of the Country.
Two years ago it was said, the NDP would always be the third party, today they are
the opposition. Will the Liberals be able to return to the concept they are the natural
governing party? Still an open question. There is also the possibility of a coalition,
formally of informally. Canadian politics are about to get real interesting.
Presidents of the United States don't really make decisions, They read the political
wind, and act accordingly. The only President that really did what needed to be done
was LBJ, who governed in a difficult time, and had he not pursued the war in Vietnam
he would have been a two term President, but hey we all make mistakes.

Brian Mulroney tinkered with NEP and our government looks like they want to change the rules of provincial resouces ownership.

It doesn't change what Big M said though.

After 20 or 25 years nobody cares how popular JFK or Truman or Reagan (or Obama) were...they want to know what they accomplished.

What they did.

It's valid and it makes sense to me.

Agreed.. politicians are a joke.. when they are out of office they should all crawl under a rock and disappear.

I mean, come on I am pro-Wild Rose Party in Alberta which is even more Conservative than the Conservative party.. but I don't like NAFTA. Fair trade.. the USA & China to big of a market in the USA that is now subsidized out of the ass..

It seems we are letting foreign companies come into Canada, take our resources and 100 years from now we are going to be like the guy on Monopoly after he goes bankrupt... empty pockets.

Freer and more trade are the best things that can happen to any country.

Not if the other country is subsidizing the sh!t out of the industry, it makes it harder for the the country trading to compete.. unless you want to work for a $1 a day.. as they do in China.

Now Walter, go back to your day job greeting people at WalMart.. never know, you may win the lottery yet and be one of those wealthy Conservatives you so idolize.

I don't think anyone should be taking tips from Brian Mulroney. Might as well have a hotline for GWB as well.

No way you are conservative with your rantings. Wild Rose wants freer trade. Oh, by the way, you hurt my feelings. We greeters can take only so much.

damngrumpy, you are as crazy as a loon, if you actually believe that everyone hated Mulrooney.

Maybe everyone that YOU knew did, but a lot of people did not. If everyone had hated him, he would not have gotten any votes at all.

Two of Mulroney's legacies were the GST and Free Trade, which both benefitted Canada. They might not be perfect, but they were a step forward.

The first of 3 disastrous, free market ideologues that have all but destroyed the economic prospects of Canada, through Free Trade, regressive taxation, monetarism, deregulation, privatization.. Mulroney, Chretien, Harper.

All i remember about him is how he used to grovel shamelessly before American Presidents and Global Oligarchs, tried his best to dismantle the political integrity of the country through Meech Lake, enriched himself by selling patronage to Airbus.. a failure, a quisling, a weakling.. corrupt and a fool. So why should i care what he sais.
