Brexit: MPs back Boris Johnson's plan to leave EU on 31 January

MPs have backed Prime Minister Boris Johnson's plan for the UK to leave the EU on 31 January.

They voted 358 to 234 - a majority of 124 - in favour of the EU (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill, which now goes on to further scrutiny in Parliament.

The bill would also ban an extension of the transition period - during which the UK is out of the EU but follows many of its rules - past 2020.

The PM said the country was now "one step closer to getting Brexit done".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn told his MPs to vote against the bill, saying there was "a better and fairer way" to leave the EU - but six of them backed the government.

Mr Johnson insists a trade deal with the EU can be in place by the end of the transition period, but critics say this timescale is unrealistic.

The bill had been expected to pass easily after the Conservatives won an 80-seat majority at last week's general election.

MPs also backed the timetable for further debate on the bill over three days when they return after the Christmas recess - on 7, 8 and 9 January.

The government says it will get the bill into law in time for the 31 January Brexit deadline.

The legislation, which would implement the Brexit agreement the prime minister reached with the EU in October, was introduced in Thursday's Queen's Speech, setting out the government's priorities for the next year.

A VERY Merry Brexmas! Boris Johnson looks delighted with his thumping 358 to 234 Brexit deal win after heading straight from the Commons to toast victory with lunch at Scott's in Mayfair

Prime Minister Boris Johnson was seen leaving a restaurant in Mayfair where he enjoyed a celebratory meal following his Brexit divorce deal victory in Parliament earlier today.

After his proposal passed with a thumping 358 to 234 majority, Mr Johnson did not head back into the House of Commons to make a speech, as is usual custom, but rather headed straight to Scott's seafood restaurant to toast his overwhelming win.

It comes in the week before Christmas, after MPs overwhelmingly backed his Brexit deal in a historic vote.

It's been a relentless few weeks for the Prime Minister, which saw him backed by voters in a general election last week before he turned his attention to getting Brexit done by the end of January.

MPs will now break for Christmas before returning in January for further debates and votes on the legislation which is needed to deliver an orderly split from Brussels next month.

Mr Johnson was able to win the vote despite facing a storm of criticism from opposition MPs over his decision to remove some concessions from the WAB made by the government during the last hung parliament to win over Labour backbenchers on issues like refugees and workers' rights.

The government is now hoping to get the WAB onto the statute book by the middle of January to give the European Parliament time to ratify the divorce accord before the deadline.

Today's vote represents a massive victory for Mr Johnson and is the final proof that his general election gamble has paid off, with the passage of the WAB now a formality because of the Tories' massive 80-seat majority.

In a sign of Mr Johnson's joy at the result, he was spotted signing autographs for Tory MPs to mark the occasion after it was announced.

He then tweeted that the vote meant 'we are one step closer to getting Brexit done'.

Nigel Farage, the leader of the Brexit Party and a long term critic of the PM's deal, said it was a 'historic moment' and the UK's departure from the EU 'is happening'.

Labour and other opposition parties voted against the PM's deal but with Mr Johnson now in charge of a cohort of 365 Tory MPs he will not be able to be stopped from delivering on his 'get Brexit done' mantra.

Brexit: MPs give final backing to Withdrawal Agreement Bill

BBC News
9 January 2020

MPs have given their final backing to the bill that will implement the UK government's Brexit deal.

The Commons voted 330 to 231 in favour of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill and it will now pass to the House of Lords for further scrutiny next week.

If peers choose to amend it will it come back before MPs.

The bill covers "divorce" payments to the EU, citizens' rights, customs arrangements for Northern Ireland and the planned 11-month transition period.

The UK is due to leave the EU on 31 January.

The bill comfortably cleared its third reading in the House of Commons, as expected, with a majority of 99. All 330 votes in favour were Conservative.

It took just three days for the bill to pass the remaining stages in the Commons, after MPs gave their initial approval to the legislation before the Christmas recess.

Theresa May - Boris Johnson's predecessor in Downing Street - repeatedly failed to get her Brexit agreement passed by MPs, which led to her resignation as prime minister.

.......The countdown is on..........Almost there.
So will the Brits celebrate??? Will be watching to see how smoothly this transition will happen. Will all this be seismic or a mere ripple ??? in the higher scheme of things...

I'll be celebrating with a raised beer at 11pm on Friday night. It's a great start to the weekend. I daresay millions of others will be celebrating, too, with parties and fireworks. I'd love to see our Independence Day become a national holiday, too.

Just 48 hours and 21 minutes to go.

With two days to go until all British MEPs lose their jobs, Nigel Farage’s final speech at the EU ended very dramatically when he was cut off for ‘disobeying the rules’ ahead of the Brexit withdrawal agreement vote.

Oh dear. EU throws another tantrum...
