Movie theaters to test discounted ticketing

I go out for a movie maybe ten or twelve times a year, I'll bet most of those will be on "cheap night" where the weekly special gets your bum in a seat with popcorn and a drink for twelve bucks. That's about half of the regular price. I have a decent TV/sound system at home but I'm still of the mind that some flicks deserve the big screen, especially the big special effects extravagnazas. One newer development I could live without though, is the showing of commercials in theatres. That's trespassing on sacred ground in my mind.

The last movie that I went to see in the theater was Star Trek: Nemesis. I saw Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers just before that. Boy, that was a long time ago!

Our movie theater has a special theater where you get better seats ( super comfy, further recline) more leg room, better sound, pick your seat.

This theater is worth going to when it's a good movie. Nothing worse then spending $30 (seat, drinks, popcorn) and the movie is shyte.

We have one here too, it's the lounge where they serve alcohol.

That sounds nice. Is that a common option these days? We just got a new theater last year here in Penticton after what felt like centuries in this old relic from the sixties so we're feeling a little pampered right now, but going the extra few bucks to lay back in a lazy-boy in front of the big screen sounds inviting. I take it you're in a major center somewhere?

Yes, lower mainland. It's been awhile since I've been in a small town and I forget that what's available here is not available everywhere.

oh, that's nice. We have a theatre here that does that, but this particular one doesn't.

Sometimes it's kind of cool. There's another relic of a theater in Oliver south of here that's like going back in time, all seats five bucks all week. And right across the street from a darned fine Indian restaurant. Makes for a nice evening out. The movies there are a month or two behind the release date, so if you miss something on its way through town here you can always get another shot at it in Oliver. I see that turning up a lot too, theaters going to a strictly "second showing" format where not-so-new movies play for discounted prices. Still costs and arm and a leg to get past the snack bar though.

all I need is a tv with the screen size of an imax screen and everything will be cool. :) ;)

Phhhh....at home I've got access to stream unlimited movies onto the
computer that has a much larger screen than the TV, and a Bose
sound system....where I can drink and smoke whatever I wish
while wearing whatever I care to, without having 25 teenagers
sending & receiving cell calls and texts during the movie and
being subjected to the aroma of whatever passes as butter
on popcorn in a movie theatre...while my car is parked out
front and my dogs can cruse around wherever they wish.

I've no urge what so ever to go to a movie theatre, at all.

First of all the movies do nothing for me, send they are too much money for what I get.
Even at home I rarely watch a movie. I did last night with two of our great grand kids.
we put on Yogie Bear in the machine and turned on the TV hockey could be watched
later.
Ten bucks apparently is cheap for a movie in Kelowna and the snacks cost more than
the show that is why I haven't been to a show since 911 made the rounds. I don't think
the movie actors are all that great from snippets I've seen. I hate super hero movies and
things that blow up I regard that as fill and nothing more. I prefer news and sports when
I watch TV which is not much these days.
the reason they cost so much is the actors pay and the cost of filming crap. If there was
a good plot line and something of interest perhaps I'd pay some attention.

We've come light years in home entertainment in the last decade with the proliferation on affordable flat screens and surround sound systems, it's great to have access to that sort of viewing in your own living room without the downside RinR speaks off, but there's still a place for the big screen in my entertainment line-up. Sometimes I'm in a mood for ten minutes of plot crammed into a two hour chase scene, but I'm pretty easy to entertain when it comes to that sort of stuff. I find I pay a little more attention to writers and directors these days, there are a few "movers and shakers" out there that consistently produce a product that appeals to me. On the other end, at home I can watch and re-watch and re-re-watch stuff that I find particularly enjoyable, and there's also the option of going back to review a scene when desired, not to mention pee-breaks without having to miss anything.
On an unrelated side-note, I just re-watched Bladerunner the other day, probably for the tenth or twelfth time over the years. That film never fails to impress me, especially when you look at the world it created without the aid of computer generated graphics.

Want to see marketing in action? See how many people spend $12.00 on a bucket of popcorn. This stuff is a caloric bomb of greasy badness.

I find the practice of deny patrons the option of bringing in their own food odd. And why are most of the choices in a movie theater crap food?

I get that, I really, really do but....

....sometimes I just want to go out! Not for like 99% of the films that come out but for maybe at least one of the big blockbuster releases each summer.

And sometimes seeing certain movies with a group of like minded individuals can increase the pleasure of seeing them.

We went to see Pina at the Fifth Avenue Cinema. We made an event of it. It was spectacular knowing everyone was appreciating what was being shown.

I go to the Mayfair and Bytowne here in Ottawa fairly often. Independent and second run movies or older ones sometimes. The tickets are $6-7 for members (about $10/year for that). You only have to go to a few movies before you are saving money. Sometimes I go to the cheap nights at other theatres. The one in the St Laurent Mall is only $2.50 on Tuesdays. When it comes to regular prices at regular theatres - i rarely go.

The last movie that I went to see in the theater was Star Trek: Nemesis. I saw Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers just before that. Boy, that was a long time ago!

I saw both of those when they first came out. December 2002. I remember it fairly well.

Right now, Sunday night, I'm just starting to watch a movie, at home,
streamed to the computer, while I'm dressed in sleep pants and a
tank top after changing the thermostat on the car out at the curb.

The Girlfriend is sleeping on the sofa, and the Dogs are all close.
I can make an easy supper without missing any of the show, &
if this movie....

....is a dud, I can just click up one of about a hundred others that
I flagged as possibles without being committed due to paying an
overly inflated ticket price.

Movie Theatres gouged too deep for too long, while shrinking the
theatres to skinny rooms with smaller screens to become multi
-plexes instead of theatres. I couldn't be bothered at this point
with the 'test of discounted ticketing' thing. Too little, too late.

Twila, they only stop you if they know you have the food. I've successfully snuck in copious amounts of snacks and drinks when I went to the movies. Once, we even had beer (I was a bad, bad boy, I know...;) ) there! I'd rather get the snacks for cheap than pay an arm and a leg for slim pickin's they call "snacks" there.;)

I take if we ever go to the show I need to bring my big purse?

And here I thought my days as a mule were over.
