Well nothing new here. Some people might already know I like Tommy Douglas, who was voted Greatest Canadian. I thought I posted this, this morning but I was in a rush and I don't see it so I'll report it. I think if you like Douglas or not, or even the OLD NDP/CCF or not Tommy Douglas was respected by most Canadians left and right.

I was not born when he made this speech but when I heard it on the CBC it reminds me of how I've always felt of Canadian politics. He had away of making a complex issue easy for the common listener to understand. If you want to hear the speech go here

http://archives.cbc.ca/IDC-1-74-851-4958/people/tommy_douglas/clip4

but I'll post it for those who wish to read it.

Mouseland – A Political fable told by Tommy Douglas in 1944

Saskatchewan New Democrats
Original Text Version and Video Version Narrated by Kiefer Sutherland, Tommy’s Grandson

It's the story of a place called Mouseland. Mouseland was a place where all the little mice lived and played, were born and died. And they lived much the same as you and I do.

They even had a Parliament. And every four years they had an election. Used to walk to the polls and cast their ballots. Some of them even got a ride to the polls. And got a ride for the next four years afterwards too. Just like you and me. And every time on election day all the little mice used to go to the ballot box and they used to elect a government. A government made up of big, fat, black cats.

Now if you think it strange that mice should elect a government made up of cats, you just look at the history of Canada for last 90 years and maybe you'll see that they weren't any stupider than we are.

Now I'm not saying anything against the cats. They were nice fellows. They conducted their government with dignity. They passed good laws--that is, laws that were good for cats. But the laws that were good for cats weren't very good for mice. One of the laws said that mouseholes had to be big enough so a cat could get his paw in. Another law said that mice could only travel at certain speeds--so that a cat could get his breakfast without too much effort.

All the laws were good laws. For cats. But, oh, they were hard on the mice. And life was getting harder and harder. And when the mice couldn't put up with it any more, they decided something had to be done about it. So they went en masse to the polls. They voted the black cats out. They put in the white cats.

Now the white cats had put up a terrific campaign. They said: "All that Mouseland needs is more vision." They said: "The trouble with Mouseland is those round mouseholes we got. If you put us in we'll establish square mouseholes." And they did. And the square mouseholes were twice as big as the round mouseholes, and now the cat could get both his paws in. And life was tougher than ever.

And when they couldn't take that anymore, they voted the white cats out and put the black ones in again. Then they went back to the white cats. Then to the black cats. They even tried half black cats and half white cats. And they called that coalition. They even got one government made up of cats with spots on them: they were cats that tried to make a noise like a mouse but ate like a cat.

You see, my friends, the trouble wasn't with the colour of the cat. The trouble was that they were cats. And because they were cats, they naturally looked after cats instead of mice.

Presently there came along one little mouse who had an idea. My friends, watch out for the little fellow with an idea. And he said to the other mice, "Look fellows, why do we keep on electing a government made up of cats? Why don't we elect a government made up of mice?" "Oh," they said, "he's a Bolshevik. Lock him up!" So they put him in jail.

But I want to remind you: that you can lock up a mouse or a man but you can't lock up an idea.

The Moral of the Story "Mouseland" is a political fable, originally told by Clare Gillis, a friend of Tommy Douglas. Tommy has used this story many times to show in a humorous way how Canadians fail to recognize that neither the Liberals or Conservatives are truly interested in what matters to ordinary citizens; yet Canadians continue to vote for them.

The story cleverly deals with the false assumption by some people that CCF'ers (NDP'ers) are Communists. The ending shows Tommy Douglas has faith that someday socialism, which recognizes human rights and dignity, will win over capitalism and the mere pursuit of wealth and power.

Everybody should read that. I'm actually surprised that not everybody has...some of us were fortunate enough to have grown up with it.

Funny that people people keep on electing governments that work against their better interests though.

When I was 2 and again when I was 6,I had two hospitalizations(I'm 63,by the way)...no medicare, and no "Blue Shield" policy.
It took my parents several years to pay off those hospital bills.

Well I guess since more and more Canadians didn't live during those days some people are taking our puplic health care system for granted

the system is taken for granted!

that is why a big part of reforming it is educating people on how to properly make use of it. The old rushing off to the emergency room for something as little as a splinter has to be dealt with in some form or another.

I think it was a general mis manage of the puplic health care system and individual miss-use and a little propaganda from the extreme right.

More than a little propaganda, Finder. They've been telling us that medicare is not sustainable since Mulroney was in power. They've been cutting funding to it, then pointing at it and saying that it doesn't work for almost as long. When they cut funding enough that it caused a crisis they said that the crisis was proof that it was unsustainable.

What they have not done...not one of them, not once...is stand up and tell us how having to pay higher rates to private companies is supposed to be more sustainable to us. Right now medicare is paid for out of our taxes. If they cut those taxes and make us pay more privately, how will it save us money? It won't, we'll still be paying, it's just that we'll be paying more.

The taxes we pay to support health care won't be cut either...at least not by much. There are still going to be a lot of people out there who cannot afford private service, so a public system will have to be maintained for them with our tax dollars. So now you are paying for one system with your tax dollars and another system with your paycheque.

The people who keep assuring us that they are fiscally responsible and know what they are doing assure us that this will save us money. In fact, they are ideological morons trying to sell us snake oil so their corporate buddies can turn a profit.

For a lot of years, the AMA (American Medical Association), the American Health Insurance Companies, and American Pharmeceutical firms have cast an envious eye on 40 million new customers just north of their border. That Greed Economy has spent an awful lot of money labeling us rotten Socialists that should be embracing the Free Market in Health Care. There won't be anything "Free" about it though, at least not for us, the consumers. We will have to pay even more for health care under their system in order to show a profit for shareholders. That's great if you are a shareholder but lousy if you are ill.

PART II

MOUSELAND --- THE SEQUEL.

So years later, long after George Washington Mouse
was elected and the Fat Cats became a distant memory,
lo and behold what did the mice find ?

That some of them grew into very very fat rodents.
Disgustingly powerful and digustingly obese.

Having long gotten rid of their uber predators, the Fat Cats, the little mice were finding that maybe they
were no different than the much despised Fat Cat.

They found that their own kind became just what
they hated in the fat cats.

In fact this new hideous discovery about themselves,
that they were capable of the same problems they
thought were inherent to another species, The Dictator Cats propelled themselves into violent civil war.

Some even thought of bringing back those fat cats.
But the wiser ones prevailed.

The wiser ones told their fellow mice that they
must own the problem, they must own responsibility
for themselves, and going back to the old dictators, the fat cats just because they offered some false
sense of security was no solution.

No, the seeds of wrong lie in every type of being
from mice to cats, from socialism to capitalism,
from democracy to dictatorship.

All those years the fat cat dictators ruled, the mice
secretly thought of themselves as intrinisically better.

It was ashame, a big shame to find out that they
themselves could also be that way.

But the wise ones said, Don't let this discovery about ourselves
bring us down. Let us grow from this. Learn from this.
Humility gives great wisdom if you really know more about
yourselves and how you can make the same mistakes you only
thought others made.

This is wisdom.

And so Mouseland grew older, and wiser.

And a new order of the day was INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY.
There were to be no hated targets anymore.

Hey don't make a classic like mouse land into your version of animal farm. lol. Don't forget many famous leftists have been the biggest fighters against communism. Such as George Orwell and Tommy Douglas.
