They had it right the first time. Montreal City Hall had initially planned to rename a street in Little Burgundy after the late Daisy Sweeney. However, very recently they backtracked and decided against the plan.

It was fine to rename University street downtown after Robert Bourassa, a controversial figure due to bill 22. Yet it’s not ok to rename a street after a non-controversial figure such as the late Daisy Sweeney. Why is this? Oh, let me guess. Could it have something to do with the fact that he was white and she was Black???

Daisy Sweeney mentored both Oscar Peterson (her late brother) and Oliver Jones, both world renowned pianists back in their day.

To add insult to injury, surviving family members were not consulted in regards to the change in plans. When they eventually found out, they were rightfully very upset. I’d be too if a family member is denied proper recognition for outstanding achievement simply because she was Black.

Racism is alive and well at Montreal City Hall!
