Nova Scotia Giving Black Residents $2.7 Million To Settle Land Rights
A headline from Huffington Post
It's interesting how the title of a news item can present a particular impression (which may not be accurate). In this case, the title would make it seem that cash is being given to Nova Scotia residents of African descent. That will likely inflame the passions of some of the readers (perhaps intentionally).
The reality is that this is a historic injustice in that land grants were given to white settlers with the title to the land but black settlers did not get the title to the land. The money will go to surveyors and probably lawyers (who may be mostly white) to sort out the situation and give proper title to black people/families who have been on the land, based on the original grant, for a very long time. As an aside, there also seem to be questions about how it is being approached and how long it will actually take (and maybe if the amount of money is actually sufficient).
So was this a mistake in how the item was titled or was it intentional to give it more of an edge.
