DES MOINES — During four years as the only Midwestern state to offer same-sex marriage, Iowa has seen thousands of couples travel to the Hawkeye State for wedding celebrations that have pumped millions of dollars into the state economy.


But Iowa will get some competition in the cake and champagne industry when a Minnesota law legalizing gay marriage goes into effect on Aug. 1. Some Minnesota officials are already rolling out the red carpet for gay couples from other states.

Gay Pride weekend is on at the moment and the local media is showing how this has grown enormously - families and gay couples go to the festivities esp in Loring Park and the cities are bringing in truckloads of money in tax revenues. It sure was smart to change the law.

Another news report indicated that now that California has legalized marriage equality the state is bringing in multiples of millions of dollars as well. Smart choices raise lots of revenue!

I am somewhat bemused by the unbridled interest by some Canadians in the sexual prohibitions of our neighbours to the south, especially when here in our peaceable kingdom these prohibitions are historical curiosities. Perhaps it is they wish to emigrate and are afraid their interests will be unfulfilled in the Empire of the Some.
