Mentally ill need help, not handcuffs: police

VICTORIA - Canada's top cops say police are increasingly the first line of contact for people suffering from a mental illness.

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police will release a report today in conjunction with the Mental Health Association of Canada on police interactions with the mentally ill.

Saskatoon Police chief Clive Weighill, the association's newly elected president, says those people need the health system, not the justice system.

He's urging police across the country to work with local health, mental health, education and social service providers on a joint strategy.

More than 400 law enforcement leaders from civilian and military police are attending the annual gathering of the police chiefs in Victoria.

Delegates have passed four resolutions this year, including one that urges the federal government to approve a roadside drug-screening device.

People don't believe in doing what is good for other people. We believe in punishing and punishment for everything.

We don't teach children how children learn. We expect them to be to learn the way we adults have decided to teach them. We use the excuse "it's always been done this way" or " this is how I was taught, and I"m ok" Which one should then ask them to "imagine how much better off you'd be if someone had taught you the way you learn"

We warehouse people, we don't rehabilitate. We don't really care about individuals.

If somebody is crazy, we do not have the right to lock them up until they are cured. We do not have the right to force them to take their pills. The crazy person is protected by rights and freedoms so naturally their first point of contact will likely be the police. Most crazy people likely don't think they are crazy.

Have you read the book "brain on fire"? It's the true story of a girl who suffered Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis. She thought she was going crazy. She heard voices and saw people doing things they weren't actually doing. Then dr's thought she had a type of schizophrenia and seizures. She spent months in hospital. Turns out it's a type of auto immune disease effecting the brain and that potentially there are hundreds of people suffering from this without knowing it.

There is a very great chance that many "crazy" people aren't crazy.

The thing that struck me the hardest in this book was the difficulty her parents had in getting a very well known and educated doctor to stop thinking their daughter was an alcoholic and blaming alcohol for her condition.
