Re: Manitoba reporter fired from her job for "biased" reporting on federal politics
Usually big bosses trake issue with a biased report inside the operation and rarely
and I mean rarely would someone be fired. Not because the biased report but in
fact because its embarressing for the station. Things get sorted out inside and the
people responsible sort it out. I have not seen the content so its hard to say what
happened. During the last provincial eleciton in BC we had a local reporter who
was actually assisting in a campain for the Liberals while being on air as a news
person. She was not fired but they did take her off air until after the election which
is only fitting. Freelance people are more vulnerable of course as they can have
their articles overlooked.
There could be other reasons. I am speculating here but cautiously. I read there
was advertising pulled. For a small station really tough its the worst threat of all.
Also a lousy way to settle a dispute but it happens. The other thing about what
we saw was reference to the Robocall Scandal. That aside this reporter upset
soneone and we don't really know why or who is the problem. Biased reporting
according to who? It could also be just that. I would like to see what the story was
that created this reaction. Retired Canadian Soldier knows the inside of a newsroom
can be a secretive place in its own right and there is a hell of a lot more that is not
being reported here. To be fair we don't know who is to blame either. As for going
to the labour board? No media is the Federal Labour Board and that is a waste of
space that organization. Secondly if she did that it would be a long road back into
the business as soldier knows its a small fraternity and its sometimes unforgiving.
Best to lay low and reappear somewhere else.
A couple of things here that should be cleared up.
one there is unbiased reporting. I have had stories
that were contrary to the news directors opinion but
he didn't fire me just made sure I had all the facts.
And in this business you can fire a contractor as a
freelancer and you can also put the word out to starve
them out of the business if you are really mean spirited.
News in print or broadcast media is a club of its own with
its own rules.
