TORONTO - It’s called bus surfing.
And one Toronto man found out how dangerous the stunt can be.
A 32-year-old man remained in life-threatening condition Tuesday after he was found lying on Eglinton Ave. E., near Markham Rd., in Scarborough around 2 a.m. Monday.
Police said the man had been spotted hanging on to the back of a moving TTC bus.
He suffered life-threatening injuries, including head trauma, according to Toronto Police Const. Hugh Smith.
“At some point, he is sitting and then standing ... He is (definitely) on the back of the vehicle,” Smith said.
He added investigators are looking at whether a vehicle hit him after he fell from the bus, but believe the man sustained the injuries from hitting the ground.
Smith said the man was seen standing and sitting on the bus’ back bumper and that a short video had been taken shortly before he fell off.
TTC spokesman Brad Ross confirmed he fell from the back of the Morningside 116 bus, which runs between Kennedy subway station and Finch Ave E. Ross said bus surfing is not common.
“It’s rare, actually. I’ve seen one photo from a couple of years ago of somebody doing this on the back of a streetcar, but it’s not one of those occurrences that comes up at all,” said Ross.
Ross called the stunt a “reckless” act that “will not only endanger your own life, but motorists, as well, if you do fall.”
