Loto-Quebec is temporarily protecting the identities of winners who hit jackpots of $4 million and more after an alleged plot to extort money from a couple who won $27 million was exposed.
The policy, a first for the provincial lottery corporation, was put into place in the weeks after the incident, spokesman Jean-Pierre Roy said Tuesday.
"We're going to try to have a policy that respects the public's right to know — they buy the tickets — and the media's interest," he told the Canadian Press.
He said the solution, to be discussed soon with the Quebec government, will be "done in the best interests of the winners."
Since its creation, Loto-Quebec has published the names of its winners and used their pictures for publicity purposes.

Given recent revelations in some provinces, especially Ontario, about retailer fraud on large winning tickets, any secrecy on the part of the parent lotto company will be viewed with suspicion. Granted, winners shouldn't be subject to threats by scum but keeping retailers and the lotto corporation honest has to have high priority. A toughie. Another compromise forced on us because of the whims of riffraff.
