Racist post??? How so? I'm making the observation that from what I could see there were virtually no visible minorities in that audience. I could also have said "from what I could see there were a lot of visible minorities at the NDP and Liberal receptions". Both statements are true. Just as at a hockey game you will not see a lot of visible minorities, is it racist to point that observation out? Or does it simply tell you that visible minorities are not that interested in attending hockey games?

Well, I think that is the point....while you are at the hockey game counting out the number of people with different colored skin, the people who arn't concerned about race are watching the game.

I have been to many hockey games in my life, and I have never once thought to myself.."gee there are a lot of white people here". The fact that you are differentiating people based on the color of their skin, does show a bit a racism. Not to mention you are stereotyping white people.

interesting point nomre,

how many people stand around taking "colour counts" at events?

the hockey comparison is funny to me personally though since i see hockey as a low-brow pastime, and the cons as something similar.

I never knew strapping on a pair of skates and playing a sport could be a low-brow past time. I guess I'm also low-brow then. Keeping fit is terribly low-brow.

I could feel like a minority at my school. Minorities, at times, seem to outnumber caucasian students, but who cares? We're here to learn. What does ethnicity or disability matter?

And personally I take offence to the Lily-white comment as well. No one would ever be caught dead saying something so idiotic as "midnight black." I dislike the double standard in "political correctness."

LOL.
I wouldn't say it quite like that.
I would say the cons are one team in the sport, and the liberals are on the oposing team, NDP are the referees, and the Bloq is the farm team.

Wednesday you may have found some ideal utopia which is nice. We have a place in Manhattan so I spend a lot of time there and it is very diverse and cosmopolitan and for a city its size is very harmonious. There is tension and there are incidents of course. But if you walk down 2nd Avenue towards the east village there are Hallel shops, Mosques, and Kosher restaurants with Muslims and Orthodox Jews all milling about the same block. Muslims and Hindus live side by side in relative peace. The possibility for humankind is inspirational. This must be what you are seeing outside of Santa Barbara.

But we are in New England most of the time and the incidents have been administrative. It is not what you refer to as overt racism. They are the types of problems that occur when you are raising children. On a visit to an emergency room someone decided that skin colour plus an origin in Africa equaled HIV positive. No one would take responsibility so they insisted they were right even though they could not produce any tests. It was a lot of work straightening that out. My son really liked to play guns as I did at his age. His teacher called me last year and said he had done something so horrible that she was having nightmares. He was written up and if there was another incident he would be suspended. It turned out he had made believe a building block was a gun. It happened again last week. He was written up and had to eat his lunch by himself. This time he had picked up a small stone and was just throwing it up and catching it. To me these are the kinds of things I did as a kid and nobody noticed. There are many of these kinds of incidents. The discipline policy in schools here is that they tell me about what happened and expect me to talk to my son.

We are off the topic of the thread. I don't think it is odd at all to notice who is in the audience when the Prime Minister of a multicultural country is talking at one of these functions. It will be interesting to see if the diversity increases with time in office. And if it doesn't he is not doing his job and people have a right to point that out.
